This will also be helpful/necessary when we return to in-person instruction if we want students to hand-in an assignment on paper, but still use Teams Assignments as a way for students to keep track of work that is due. Being able to disable student upload would make it clear to students that it is a physical assignment and not a digital assignment.

Yes please. And it's also very important that what Linda Koyen mentions also happens: assignments marked as "needs revision" need to move back up into the student's "assigned" section, otherwise they won't see it. Even if there's a notification, if it doesn't show up in students' active assignments section, they won't notice.

I agree. This is VERY confusing for students. Many students think they are getting the assignment returned because they didn't do something correctly and need to do something additional. They don't understand that it's just giving them their assignment back.

I think some of the confusion is coming because the "return" option can *also* be used for students to make revisions and re-submit. As suggested by Lee above, there should be 2 different options to make this more clear to students. The default should be "work completed, return to learner," but then there should also be an option for "return work for improvement."
