Too bad https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/17372452-have-video-off-by-default-in-a-team-call was rejected. I too would prefer to have video off by default.

To build on this idea: make this status sharing limited in time.
And off course limited to free/busy.
The use case I have in mind is sharing my availability with the Office 365 support engineer via Teams instead of constantly sending emails with available slots.Bram Mertens

Even if the calendar isn't shared showing free/busy status would already help.
