Unfortunately because of changing priorities, this feature was moved to the backlog. The team hopes to pick it up again in the near future.

Removed from the backlog despite over 5000 people asking for it? Seriously?

Do please hurry up. This is basic functionality. Who on earth decided to leave it this late to implement it?

Actually, it was an error on my part (getting muddled up on the names of a couple Office 365 groups). I got over the problem by going into Groups in Office 365 as Admin, opening the correct group (the one in which I had created the plan I wanted to use) and went to its Microsoft Teams tab and created a Team from this Office 365 Group. Back in Teams that new Team had appeared and I could connect in the existing Plan.
However, the dialog in Teams is unhelpful as it had suggested I had an existing Plan, though it would not show any ... because I didn't have any!

Got the same problem. Can't add an existing plan (created in Planner itself) to a Team.

This is stopping us from using Microsoft Teams. How on earth can something as basic as this not be in the functionality?
Three and a half years after first requested, now requested by 6650 people and we still don't have this done. Pull your finger out, Microsoft.
