This is currently in internal testing rings at Microsoft, and the feature team is targeting a release to the public in early Q2.

We are continuing to work on this feature. As with Windows notifications, we are also doing work to give users the choice between Teams notifications & Mac notifications.
We will update you as work progresses.

This is working today in the web client on Edge & Chrome. The team is actively investigating feasibility in the desktop client.
Adding email as a left tab panel remains under review. We are working on adding several Teams and email integrations:
- Share to Teams: Share a copy of an email and any attachments into a chat or channel directly from Outlook
- Share to Outlook: Share a copy of a channel or chat conversation via email directly from Teams
- Actionable Teams Activity Emails: Teams missed activity emails display the latest replies and allow you to reply directly from Outlook

Thank you for the feedback. Changing the default setting is under review by the feature team, and your feedback is very useful as they are evaluating.
It would be good if there was an admin feature to auto follow a channel for notifications. So if we get a new staff member and add them into Sick, Out Of Office and Working From Home Channel it can have the notifications turned on without them having to do it because every employee needs it on.
