Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.

Not allowing users to delete private chat threads in teams is a PRIVACY AND SECURITY ISSUE. This is unacceptable. Now that Teams is replacing Skype for Business, we will be exploring alternatives that better protect our privacy. Users should have the ability to delete private chat threads as they see fit - not as Microsoft allows. This is basic functionality that has been requested time and time again, and its omission is ridiculous.
The lack of this feature, specifically, is forcing us to abandon Microsoft Teams as a team and/or chat tool.
No, you don’t “have this already”. That’s like saying that minimizing a window is deleting a message. This is ridiculous and completely unacceptable. This could simply be an admin option (enable or disable users ability to delete chat threads), but you’re taking it out of our hands completely.
You need to allow businesses to create their own data retention policies, including Teams/chat.
We can do this in Exchange/Outlook, we can do this in Skype, we can do this in every app except for Teams and it’s bad policy and design on your part to think that we wouldn’t feel privacy is important in 2019.
