I’m so happy to share an update with you! The feature team has let me know that they are working hard at this and are aiming for a spring time release.
Please comment below if you might be interested in testing or TAP, and include the industry, company size, and location of your org. We would likely want to hit a very wide range of demographics.

I'd be interested in any testing efforts in a QA environment. Solar Turbines in a BU of Caterpillar and is (I believe) one of, if not THE largest Enterprise roll-outs for O365 to date. Solar is specifically a manufacturing company and we have about 8k O365 licenses. We have offices in over 93 countries but, I am based in San Diego, CA. I'm the O365 lead for the BU.
Hi Everyone – thank you for your patience. As was commented by someone below, Suphatra is no longer at Microsoft, but rest assured we are working on this feature.

Without initial support for private channels, many Teams will have been created as a work around. Will there be support to move channels from these Teams (along with all their data) to another channel so we can consolidate our work areas? This will be a critical feature for our Enterprise as whole chunks of the organization restructure their data once private channels are released.
The feature is still being worked upon. Many different changes are going into Teams and will provide a slow but steady pace to our performance increases.
I don’t have any new details at the moment but hope to get some additional feedback in the next several weeks.
