We have rolled out a fix for improving Mac performance while in a meeting. This should help with heating and perf issue on Macs.
Please update your client (Settings→check for updates). Let us know your feedback. There are other performance improvements we are working in parallel, we will share updates as soon as they are available.

Thank you for your continued feedback. As many people have pointed out, this is available on mobile today. Support for replying to a specific message is on the backlog for desktop. I’ll let you know when we have progress to share. Thanks.

We are getting closer, and are still working thru some bugs, but hope to release this as part of a Public Preview pack in early 2021! (Windows 10 released with the December 2020 pack this week)
You can learn more about the new Microsoft Teams Public Preview program here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreview, and Teams administrators can find documentation to manage which users will see the Public Preview option here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreviewAdmin

The fact it currently doesn't observe the Mac do not disturb is really disturbing (pun intended). People send me salary information, personnel details, etc and it's a risk when I hook up a screen. I have to exit Teams to manage it currently, which is not a solution.

Great performance and user experience remain a topmost priority for us. Application launch time has seen improvements in the recent build. We will continue making improvements across the product including channel to chat switching and overall resource consumption.

Please implement this capability. There is a clear distinction for the use of the Teams/Channels capability (where you can do this) vs Chat. Our company predominantly uses Chat (my personal usage would be 90% in its favour, and I don't think that would be uncommon) hence the lack of this capability is very frustrating.
