We acknowledge the customer demand for Private Channels and have been hard at work on it. Private Channels is currently in preview with a select group of customers. We expect to release the feature to the public later this Fall, and will update here when we are starting to roll out to all customers. We appreciate all the feedback you have provided to us on this forum and thank you for your patience.

Has anyone gotten this yet? They said it will come out in September and we're almost halfway through...

    Mike commented  ·

Saw this in the upcoming changes email...

    Mike commented  ·

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Microsoft? Microsoft? Microsoft?

    Mike commented  ·

    Bueller... Bueller... Bueller...

    Mike commented  ·

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? This comes up almost every day. I could do what I need if only I could use private channels. Is this turning into a Vaporware feature? We were told it should be released early in 2018. That came and went and we've gotten no update since they other that "we're working on it". Can you please give us some information so what have some hope it will come out at some point? I've had to create dozens of teams simply because I can't subdivide the teams I already have. This is making our Teams environment a huge mess. Give us something. Anything.

    Mike commented  ·

Can someone at Microsoft set a monthly recurring reminder to come in here and give us an update? We're over a year past when we were told this feature would be released and are starting to lose hope if it's not gone already.

    Mike commented  ·

Any ETA at all at this point? A year ago the ETA was "Early 2018" which obviously didn't happen. Should we hope for sometime in 2019? First half? Q2? Anything?

    Mike commented  ·

3 months since the last update. What the heck is going on? Please keep us updated!

    Mike commented  ·

It's now 2019. Is there any update on this? It was supposed to go in Early 2018. It's now a year later. Throw us a bone here so we at least have a date to shoot for.

    Mike commented  ·

I pretty much answered Very Unlikely to every question. Not sure what moving conversations and teams around has to do with anything but I've never had a reason to do any of that except because the stupid Reply button is easy to miss and people make a new thread when they meant to reply to an existing one.

    Mike commented  ·

My only question is to know exactly how it's going to be implemented so we can make sure that after all this time it will do what we want. All I'm hoping for is that if there are 10 members of a Team, that I can make a channel that only 4 of those members would be able to access so managers of a department can have private conversations away from the general Team. No one not in the Team should be able to be in the Channel since that's how channels work.

    Mike commented  ·

Two months since the last update. Anyone have anything new? I guess the "aiming for early this calendar year (2018) if development and testing go well" didn't happen...

    Mike commented  ·

Had to create multiple teams again today just to split out the managers of a certain team from the actual team. wouldn't have to have so many teams if we had private channels... :(

    Mike commented  ·

It's been another month since the last update. Anything new to report? Any potential ETA we can hope for?

    Mike commented  ·

It's now into March, any update on this? Still waiting on this feature before we can get full buy-in from our company.

    Mike commented  ·

That survey was a bit odd. Team Owners are like managers and should be able to see all the channels (private or public) within their team. Only Members would need to be restricted from seeing a private channel. An Owner could just give themselves permissions to see the channel if they needed to...

We need this for our areas so the Managers of a department can have a private channel to discuss confidential information, store private files, etc.

    Mike commented  ·

We also have teams that would require this functionality before they could fully use Teams. If you need anyone to help test, I'm interested. ;)

    Mike commented  ·

Thanks for the update. How about an update on being able to view all Public Channels when going to the Add Team button. Everyone I talk to, in my company and others, jsut see a blank screen on the Add Team page.

    Mike commented  ·

We had a suggestion today that for inter-departmental communication, it might be nice for departments to have public teams. However, they still need somewhere to store their files that would not be publicly available.

Would we be able to make a Public Team and then make a Private Channel underneath it? E.g. I could create a team called "Information Technology" and leave it public so other people could interact with the IT team. Could I then make a "Help Desk" channel and make it private to just the Help Desk people? Or would I have to make a Private Team and add the entire organization to it and then make the private channel? That would obviously not be ideal...

    Thanks!

    Mike commented  ·

I'd also appreciate any sort of ETA you might have. Weeks? Months? Just so we can plan ahead. We can't fully move to Teams until we have the Private Channels working.
    Thansk!

    Mike commented  ·

When you say "different user roster than the parent team", does that mean that it would be limited to people who are in the parent Team? That's how I would want this to work. If I have a Team for my department but the manager and team leads want a private chat, they could create a private channel within the team. But they could not add anyone to the private channel who wasn't a member of the overriding Team.

If I can add people that don't have to be from the same team, then it's the same as a private Team all by itself. Channels *should* be limited by the parent team IMHO.

    Mike commented  ·

We too would love this for the following scenario...
Our Customer Support department has two persistent chat rooms in Skype that we want to replace with Teams. The Tier 1 chat is open to everyone. The Tier 2 chat is for the team leads and managers to discuss other things such as customer issues, employee issues, etc. Tier 1 people can not have access to the Tier 2 chat.

With Teams, if we make a Customer Support Team and then make a Tier 1 channel and a Tier 2 channel, then everyone on the team can see both channels so this won't work. We now have to create a separate Team just for the Tier 2 people which is less than ideal. I hope that gets put into place.

    Thanks!

This request is still in the works. And it appears most people are interested in the ability to pin multiple items. I’ll circle back to the feature team and give them your additional feedback.

Any update? Its been 6 months... I specifically would like to pin an Information messages in the conversations tab to explain the function of each channel in certain teams.

    Mike commented  ·

I want the ability to Pin a message so it is always viewable on the Conversations tab. This would be a Welcome type message letting them know the purpose of the specific team and offer guidance.

An alternative would be that I could make a new Tab with that information if there was a way to change the default tab people see when they view a team as suggested here:

Especially to PIN the things that are currently under the ellipses icon. I'd love to pin Planner over there since I use that a lot.

Especially on Org-Wide teams. The conversations tab is useless since it's spammed with all the new users. These items should be hidden by default and have a checkbox or something that I can check to view the administrative notes if I wanted to.

I could even see having the Owners of a team see them items but not the members but I'd prefer to just not see them at all.

6 months later... Any updates? Why can't somebody keep these things updated?

    Mike commented  ·

I'd just prefer to be able to pop the entire chat section out into it's own window. It's insanely disruptive that any time I want to chat with someone, I have to navigate away from the file, team, planner, etc that I was working on instead of being able to pop the chat out into its own window. I hear this complaint from my users all the time.

We have a channel that's specifically for file storage. I want the Files tab to be the default since it's extra clicks and time to always have to manually go to the files tab. Should be a pretty simple change I'd think...

The ability to remove a user from group chats (including meeting chats) is now available on desktop, and coming soon to mobile.

How it works: A user can go to any group chat of 3 or more people and navigate to the roster and by hovering over any user you will see the “X”. Clicking on this will show a confirmation dialog. Then the user must select remove to remove the user.

What does everyone see: Everyone in the chat will see the control message that says “User A removed User B from the chat”.

What does the removed user see: The removed user will still have access to the chat history but will no longer see new messages after the point of removal and will not be able to compose messages or make any changes to the chat.

Note: This setting is controlled by your tenant admin, so may or may not…

Came here to post this same thing. In Skype, I can right-click a group name and start a group chat with this people really easily. We need this functionality in Teams.

Also, in Skype I can Ctrl+Click on multiple people form my contacts list and then start a group chat with this people. I can't do this in Teams at all. It's time consuming and annoying to have to start a chat with one person and then manually add all the other people after the fact.

We know you are patiently waiting for this feature. This feature is being implemented in stages. Fast tenant switching is currently in testing both internally and with early customers. We expect to release to the public in the Fall. I’ll post an update once it’s rolling out.

Full multi-tenant, multi-user support will be added after fast tenant switching.

As a work around, I use different browsers for my different accounts. Not a great solution but I know Edge is signed in with one microsoft account, chrome is signed in with another, etc. I even do this with my normal account and my Domain Admin account. One browser for one, one for the other so I don't have to keep signing in and out.

Glad this feature exists as I just found it now. However, some updates are needed:
-Making the lists all expand every time I go to the Chat tab is really annoying. I'd prefer that they all minimize over all expanding since expanding causes them to go off the screen.
-Being able to rearrange the groups would be great too whether a simple Drag & Drop or the up/down arrows to click. Anything would be helpful.
-Also need to be able to add multiple people to a group like I can add multiple people to a chat. Currently I can only add one at a time.
