We are getting closer, and are still working thru some bugs, but hope to release this as part of a Public Preview pack in early 2021! (Windows 10 released with the December 2020 pack this week)
You can learn more about the new Microsoft Teams Public Preview program here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreview, and Teams administrators can find documentation to manage which users will see the Public Preview option here: https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreviewAdmin

Y'all have been working on this for 546 business days!! There's no way this should take this long. Integrating with notification APIs is like Software Development 101 these days. How can y'all still not have this deployed? I don't think a single person in this thread wants to keep the existing notification system, we want the native notification system. Just make it happen! PLEASE!!
Remember who you're talking to here. Mac users are used to almost everything conforming to the same set of rules. Apple admittedly has us spoiled. But it is to y'alls advantage to play by those rules in order to make this set of users happy. And right now you're failing miserably.

how this was ever considered usable in the first place is beyond me.

@Alex can we please get some kind of update on this? There's no way this should take this long. Over a year since it was supposed to be released to the public within the next quarter or so.

Apparently no progress has been made since we haven't gotten any more updates. This is ridiculous! I'm not a programmer, but I could have taught myself enough to build this myself in the 2 years this has been "actively being worked on". Apple has done all the legwork!

Come on guys. This can't be that hard to implement. The notification system is already built by Apple, you just have to plug into it. This functionality is desperately needed. I miss lots of notifications because I've got something displaying full screen or because there's a different notification in front. It's very frustrating for both me and the people waiting on my response.

I still don't understand why it wasn't built this way from the beginning, both here and in Windows 10. Why is this still "under review" instead of "being worked on"? There's nothing to review! Just make it already!

I don't really understand why this functionality wasn't present out of the gate. Seems like a no-brainer to me. It's not like you're doing something cool with the custom notification that you couldn't have done with the system notification.

Thank you for your continued feedback. The feature team is actively working on this feature as well as doing work to give users the choice to open Word/Excel/PowerPoint files by default in Browser, Office app or inside the Teams app. We will share an update here as soon as one is available.

Thank you for your feedback, the team has this request under review. We will share an update as soon as one is available.
In the meantime, you may want to try using the “Do No Disturb” status if you are in a call or meeting, and do not want to get call notifications (rings and toasts). For more information on the various status settings in Teams and how they effect your notifications, including call notifications, please visit https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/change-your-status-in-teams-ce36ed14-6bc9-4775-a33e-6629ba4ff78e.

@GastonM OMG you're a genius! I was using the workaround of having Teams open in a minimized browser window and letting notifications come through that way. But this is sooooo much nicer. It still uses the Teams notification for phone calls, but I can live with that for now.
As a side note, I had to restart Teams after switching notification styles before it asked me to allow notifications from Teams. So if anyone else doesn't get prompted to enable notifications immediately, just restart the app.
