The feature team is still reviewing this request. No additional information is available at this time.
Soon as I get more information I will provide an update!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the feature team has declined this request. The topic will remain open for votes and comments.
I honestly see a lot of people sticking with Skype for Business until it's completely deprecated if the ability to chat with people on the consumer version of Skype from Teams and vice versa isn't added.
We continue to work towards the S4B convergence.

Is there any update on this? This should 100% without a doubt at least be in planned phase.
Due to shifts in priority this has slipped onto the backlog.
The recommendation at this time is to use channels for conversations larger than 20 people.
I will continue to monitor the course of this feature request and keep you posted as things develop.
Since a Team allows 999 participants and they can chat in that just fine I don't really understand why group chats are capped at 20 participants. Group chats should have the same cap as the amount of people that can be in a Team in my opinion.
This item is still on the backlog. Still working its way up through the queue.
This item is still on the backlog.
The team is working to determine the best way to implement this requested functionality.
I’m hoping to get a ballpark ETA and will keep you posted.
