This would be a nice addition. Our office is going away from Skype and to using Teams more. One of the things I like about Skype is that I can see when a co-worker is remote.
It sounds like you are asking for Private Channels which should release later this calendar year. You can follow the topic at: https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103/suggestions/16911079
A workaround, for the time being, would be to create a team “support services team” and have “data management” and “tech support” be their own channels.
Thank you for your feedback!
A private channel is not what I would say is being requested. When creating conversations/chats, we have a way to refer to the entire team but it would be nice to be able to group people by sub-teams so that you don't have to spell out each individual person when a conversation refers to just a few people (or partial members of a team).

When replying to a conversation, I cannot use the 'Enter' key to go to the next line for a new paragraph. It is very frustrating, as it "submits" instead. This should work the same as when creating a new conversation - as I can use the 'Enter' key to start a new paragraph.
We are still considering this feature for future releases, and will continue to update the status when it changes.
