I can appreciate the need for a "2-step join" maybe sometimes you don't want to join with video, like you normally do...
Maybe there could be 2 "join" options, one for "default joins" and one for the "2-click special joins."
All join buttons outsider three main app window (say, in Outlook & the meeting has started pop-up) would see a "default join." Right click on the item (context menu command) in Teams calendar, say, to start a "special join."

I created a Uservoice account to log this very issue. The phone app causing 100% availability is a flawed use case.
Additional factor: I check to see is an overseas colleague is available, and he is, so I engage with him. Turns out he's getting ready for bed! My question for him wasn't that important. "Sleep tight, my colleague…."

My frustration is "same but opposite:" say I need to be on my work laptop, but have to attend to some family stuff. I manually set my Teams status=away.
1 or 2 days later (and after many comings & goings from the laptop,) I'm surprised to notice my teams status is still "away."
The iOS build has a "clear after" setting; why not also the desktop app?
