Separate 'Chat' as it's own small window. Also have ability to have multiple chat (people) windows.
Much like how Skype works, but allow for multiple windows per chat session/person, as how Skype use to be. There are too many times I need to have chat windows open for multiple people.

It would be better if Teams can allow more than 4 or 5 participants during video conferencing.
MS Teams integrated with Skype not too recently. They say keep your friends close.. your enemies, closer! Microsoft realized how lacking their video calling service was, hence now we will be able to use a 3rd party app, instead of the native default. At my place, we engineer AI bots, and do so by relaying communication through clients like MS Teams and Skype. All of us who engineer AI, agree that the native VC service was abysmal at best.

I second this. Even while working with tabs you have to switch to the chats and loose track of where you were and what you were doing.
Consider an excel as a tab and someone pings you. you have to close that excel and go to chat window.

I agree. Ongoing voice/video call gives challenges to switch in between chat and call
