emoji keyboard shortcuts have stopped working (again. this time in May 2021)
In June 2018 I raised https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/34688005-emoji-keyboard-shortcuts-have-stopped-working in regard to emoji keyboard shortcuts not working. I later raised a comment on that issue stating:
I just realised that this is possible by typing
All emojis here: https://www.emojione.com/emoji/v4 are supported (apparently).
This makes me happy :) . Please ignore this submission
however today, in May 2021, the keyboard short that I mentioned in that comment has also stopped working and judging by the sudden influx of comments on that issue I'm not the only one.
So, in summary, at some point in May 2021 the ability to enter an emoji by typing (or starting to type)
has stopped working.
If this was a deliberate decision then I can kinda understand it because I'll bet there are plenty of people that get annoyed that when they type a colon (:) a little menu of emojis used to appear and they don't want that.
Nonetheless, I would still like a way of typing an emoji using a keyboard shortcut (i.e. without having to resort to using my mouse). Please bring back this functionality or provide it in another way (perhaps there is a more deliberate keyboard shortcut that could be used that brings up that emoji menu).
Please give me a way of writing an emoji that doesn't require me to resort to using my mouse. I want to do it without taking my hands off the keyboard.

This is still unsatisfactory.
- For one, it literally did "just stop working."
- The colon syntax mapped to the original emojis (e.g. :) is a smile, not ::) which is an awkward spider-thing.)
- It interferes with asides, because I can no longer type the literal "(facepalm)" if I don't want an emoji
- It's these goofy animated things, not the universal emojis
- The colon syntax is more widely employed and expected (e.g. coming from Slack)

Ummm...I did not know this. This basically solves my problem.
is basically all I need.
Thank you to Marcel for sharing this. Annoying that they changed the keyboard shortcut but at least I can now do this again.
If you want to, you could use (think) or (thumbsup) in text. They get converted to emojis. Sadly to the animated ones and there are no suggestions while typing, so you have to know your emojis.

@Brendan Murphy @Patrick Eckert I'm not quite following what either of you is trying to convery.
The point here is that @Jamie Thomson description is on point. The :<some _text: syntax used to work for emoji and now it doesn't. Is this a bug? Was this functionality removed?

@Patrick, the emoji's using the colon shortcut are not the same as the ones in your link. This isn't a shortcut for the emoji picker. It's a shortcut that allows you to use universal emoji's.

The Emoji shortcode picker is now initiated with ( but it just works in PopOut Chats (facepalm) and meetings on desktop
