Ability to pause/turn off meeting chat (both during and after meeting)
I would like to disable & enable the chat function attached to a recurring meeting (or a past meeting). Students use the chat all hours and I can't be there to moderate.

Thank you for your feedback. The ability to enable and disable meeting chat in a meeting is now available. To learn more, please visit https://support.microsoft.com/office/change-participant-settings-for-a-teams-meeting-53261366-dbd5-45f9-aae9-a70e6354f88e.

I believe you can turn off the chat from the meeting settings. I may be wrong though.

This has now been released but doesn’t work for channel meetings. It really needs to be same interface for channel meetings as for other meetings

We are having all kinds of trouble with some students using inappropriate language over chat whilst the teacher is teaching online. If the teacher kicks the student out of the room, another student can then add them back in to the chat and there is nothing the teacher can do about it!

Exactly! This has lead to cyberbullying. Allowing teachers to have more control over chat features will make the online classroom safer for students. this is super important.

I like the ability to chat with my students during synchronous and asynchronous class time. My students have found a way to appropriately use it as a tool in our community.
AND I would like for there to be a way for a teacher to access student to student chats; even chats that an adult has not been invited to (without admin). Best case scenario, I do not believe the students should have access to private chats without an adult present on a public application; this is an equity issue, this is a safety issue, this is a problem.

The fact that EVERY educator I know is in support of being able to disable the chat and Teams still has not created the software change speaks to the disconnect between those making the software and those using it to teach.

Chat only hurts learning. We need to be able to disable it now.
Currently, my first graders use predictive chat on their iPads to unknowingly write inappropriate words and phrases, causing the kids and families who can read these inappropriate words to have hurt feelings. -

1. I can't disable chat. This is so disruptive for students and teachers who are doing their very best to teach remotely using a platform that we have no say in using. You can disable chat in ZOOM.
2. I cannot see my whole class. When will Microsoft fix this. I can see all 26 of my students when I use Zoom, but I am not allowed to. Imagine being 10 and stuck at home with remote learning and your face is not even on the screen so your teacher can see you, connect with you, call on you, or help you. It feels so unfair to kids. -

I believe that the ability to disable chat is imperative to the successful use of Teams for students. Chat is a distraction to students throughout the day and even outside of school hours.

It is such a distraction with younger students. I would love the ability to turn it off when it's not needed. Most importantly, I would like to turn it off when class is not in session.

Please adjust the Teams software to allow teachers/lead presenters to close the chat during instructional time and other times (like during non-school hours). This is a huge issue and has allowed situations of bullying, posting of inappropriate and offensive images, and offline distracting chats between students during class.

Students are using the chat function during off-school hours which is neither safe nor appropriate.

After a number of class meetings and discussions my students are now only using the Teams meeting chat for the class when asked to. However, several students are using the chat feature to visit with students from outside of the class and outside of the school day. It is a distraction that they find hard to resist in this time when they have limited opportunities to socialize. I would like to be able to remove the temptation when the focus should be on schoolwork and also be able to offer students opportunities to socialize in Teams meetings and in the chat when time and supervision are right.

The chat is very distracting as a classroom teacher. Although I have mine under control, I am unable to stop students from privately chatting with each other during class/ school time. This is so distracting and disruptive and takes many students off task.

We have already had several incidents of inappropriate behavior in the chats after the class is over. In addition, students have used this function to contact students from other schools for chats.

Please allow teachers the ability to disable chat, not only during class meetings, but also after class meetings. Many students are able to access chat through Chat history and some have even been able to create their own chat titled: "Join if You Hate"... This is extremely problematic on so many levels. Please remove students ability to access chats unless teacher sets permission for access during class meetings.

Please give teachers the ability to disable or enable chat as we see fit. This will ensure educators are better able to harness Teams chats as a learning tool. There have been countless issues with inappropriate use of chat already that have negatively impacted the learing environment. Teaching remotely, in a pandemic has already added an immense amount of addtional stress to our jobs - you could support teachers by allowing us to have more effective control over the tools we are using.

Please allow us to disable the chat for our classes. It is very disruptive for students especially students with learning challenges.

Un-monitored chats can be a breeding ground for bullying, harassment, and wildly inappropriate content. Educators need the ability to disable and enable the chat to help students stay focused on the lesson content and related activities. It is unrealistic to think that children and teens will not test the limits of what they can do in a chat. Educators need the ability to control the chat on a moment to moment basis. We have some students posting hundreds (no exaggeration here) of chat posts a day. There is no way for students to attend to the lesson content when they are chit-chatting with their peers about games, gossip, youtube videos, etc It is hard enough for students to focus in the remote setting. Let's help them out by allowing educators to control the chat, including private chats. Help schools keep the chat safe and appropriate.
