Disable Add Particpants and Ability to Join Meeting w/out Teacher Present
I have been trying convince Microsoft the past few days of two DANGEROUS issues
First - students are able to join a teacher-scheuled meeting w/out the teacher present. Students in the class can use the pre-scheduled join link ANYTIME before or after a scheduled meeting and start group video chats/1:1 chats without teacher supervision. We have disabled students’ ability to chat or meet now, but this loophole gives them complete access to do exactly what we have tried to disable. Why is this DANGEROUS? First, any student who was invited can join the meeting w/out the teacher and use Add Participant to invite ANYONE else in the organziation. Older high school students can invite first graders, middle schoolors, whoever they want. At that point, screen sharing of inappropriate material is easy for them to share. Bullying, sexting, and any other number of inappropriate behaviors can be expected.
Second - Related to the issue of students in the class being able to use the join link and enter the meeting w/out the teacher is their ability to Add participants to the meeting at any time. TEAMBOMBING is the next thing coming. Why would we ever want students to be able to invite anyone to a teacher-scheduled meeting? Again, this lack of security is an online SAFETY ISSUE. I have asked Microsoft repeatedly for days to give us a policy setting that allows us to turn-off Add Participants in a meeting and received a “thanks for being patient.”
So to recap:
1. Students should NEVER be permitted to enter a scheduled meeting, before or after, the teacher is present. This is ripe for serious ABUSE.
2. Students should NEVER be permitted to Add Participants to a teacher-scheduled meeting. Everything we are seeing about Zoombombing will be a Teams issue. It won’t take students long to figure out.
