Private Channels - Please add functionality to limit a channel to certain team members!!
I oversee all of the safety committees across our district. Some information is necessary for all committees but I'd love to collaborate with each committee individually as well. The ability to add certain members to certain channels would be SOOOO helpful!
Private channels enable focused private collaboration among a subset of your team. We are super excited to share that this feature is fully rolled out worldwide (including education users)!
You can find detailed information on the capabilities and management of the private channels feature here – https://docs.microsoft.com/MicrosoftTeams/private-channels.
There are four other types of channel functionality on our backlog – feel free to upvote and/or comment on the UV items listed next to each:
- Channel only members: to enable collaboration with people outside the team in a specific channel, without granting them access to the team itself. https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/31374577
- Shared channels within an organization: allow people in different teams to collaborate on a shared project or v-team in the context of their own teams. https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/18615565
- Shared channels across organizations: allow people in an organization other than yours to collaborate on a shared project or v-team. https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/32987917
- Public channels: to provide an outbound communication window for a team to engage with everyone in an organization. These channels are accessible to everyone in their tenant, without needing to join. https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/34154851
Thanks – and we hope you love your Private Channels experience!

Dear Team,we Have been asking for this feature since Long time ago and you replied that you are still working on it,if you look at the dates .more than one year,if you want to keep your users and avoid moving to other products(that i will not mention) which have implemented the feature, you need to hurry up and finish the private channels inside teams ASAP, Thank You
Roll-out has been delayed until late October per message MC187154 in the Office 365 Admin portal.
Show stopper for us.. desperately waiting on an update!

any update on the release of this feature?

This tool would be useful to limit the access for any channel within the team, not just the private channels.
So when can we 'users' expect this feature. We are really want this :-)

This feature will be very helpful... adding certain members to an channel. Can you please update the status for this feature. Thanks.

Any update on when this will be a feature in Teams please? Thank you!
Really important for our organisation. Helps to achieve a level of consolidation of information that is important for users who will not respond well to complex connections between different Teams areas.
Any ETA on Private channel support?

Extremely important feature! Is this on its way?
We would also like to be able to assign student work (through assignment and/or class notebook) to these "channel groups" within the team.

Last update was 3 months ago... where are we with that feature ? Can't wait to use it! Very usefull! Thank you!
This is probably one of the most important features to be added. Hope to receive an update very soon!
I really need to be able to limit access to certain folders. We're almost a year out from Aubrey's original idea and almost 100 votes. Super eager to hear about an update in the near future.

I think it's a good idea also for the classes. If each channel is a topic, it would be good to be able to hide the topics and just visualize the ones we are working on, keeping hidden those that have not yet been seen in the course. It would be a space of "visible" "not visible" as in Moodel.

I would like to be able to restrict posts/replies by non-owners for all channels I create, not just the General channel.
I absolutely agree. I originally thought that this is how it worked. I was very disappointed to find out that channels were just to organize conversations for the entire team.
Please make Teams more education-friendly. We need it.
