We have moved back to using Skype as the notification for Chat is not customizable. Staff that use Team for chatting, miss incoming messages, compared to Skype. I want to push the use of Team, but this factor renders the app useless.
This feature is being worked upon and I hope to have more details to share in the coming months.
I use the Windows desktop version and if I leave the app in the background to declutter my taskbar, I don't get the notifications. I like the banner but would like if it would stay on the screen instead of disappearing right away. Maybe it could show multiple banners for all the messages that come in

Warren, any update on when this feature will be pushed to production? I work for a fortune 50 company and we are also waiting until there are enhanced Teams Chat notification capabilities prior to moving away from Skype.

Our users are also missing individual chat messages. Skype had much better chat notifications (banner, then flashing icon, then the conversation popped up).
I see that Teams has the banner notice & when that disappears, if Teams is open, the Task-bar icon flashes for a while (that's good!). After that, there's not much to notice (if they were away at a meeting or something).
Also, not much noticed after the banner when Teams is only running in the system tray - it just adds a little red badge. That is not noticeable at all. It needs something more attention grabbing. Can you make a task-bar icon blink or something like that if an individual has received a chat while Teams is running only in the system tray? Also, needs something more noticeable for long-term (chat received while away from the desk at a meeting or lunch, etc.)?
This is all for individual/group Chat (not Team conversations). One is more urgent than the other.
I wish there was an option to hide the text of the chat message in the notification. If I am sharing my screen during a meeting and receive a chat from someone, I don't want everyone in the meeting to be able to read it. It would be nice to have the ability to eliminate the text displaying in the chat notification, as you can do in Slack.
I tried turning off notifications, but I then ran into the same issue as others have stated and missed a bunch of messages.
This customization would vastly improve Teams.
I need explicit control over which teams and individuals any kind of notification - on-screen pop overs, app badge icons, in-app badge icons, bolding in-app, and full blown the-CEO-sent-me-a-message alarms.
Fine grained controls over alerting is possibly the single most important feature a chat app can have and, currently, Team's game is weak.
You do get a pop-up notification if you select "Follow this channel." That's what I'm trying with my team for now.

I see 'person' added to group chat. but not the details of the chat. that would be much more helpful
This seems to be also true of the mobile apps as well.
I Completely agree, the windows desktop app is useless for alerting users, we find that users are missing messages, specifically messages to groups as opposed to individuals.
