Introduce breakout room functionality
We have a business requirement for breakout rooms with live events. The idea is pretty simple - we plan to use live events to host internal staff training webinars and as part of that, at times we will ask for small groups of people (typically 4-5) to go away into a breakout room and come back to the group with their answer/idea.
We would like to see this functionality be introduced to Microsoft Teams for not only live events but also video calls. This would provide feature parity with pre-existing tools such as Zoom, WebEx and many more which would be a cost saving for us.
Features we would expect as part of breakout rooms would be as follows:
- Option to assign users to a specific room
- Option to random assign users to a specific room
- Presenters/producers can switch between rooms
- Breakout rooms have a time limit for how long they last before everyone being bought back to the group
- The ability to appoint a moderator of a breakout room
- The ability to record each and every room separately (This is a dream ask)
Happy to provide more detail as required.
Thank you for your continued feedback. The feature team is actively working on this highly requested feature. We are testing the first release that will have the ability for meeting hosts to create breakout rooms, assign the users to the rooms and call them back to the main room. Please see our roadmap for current status here: https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Teams&searchterms=65332.

This is a crucial feature for hosting workshops on Teams.
We need this function and the function the share video outside of the organization available ASAP. We want to stay with Teams but our staff and users are forcing us to use Zoom and other things for these features!
Hi, this is urgent due to COVID. I personally use zoom since their breakout feature simply works. Would love to see if teams could offer an MVP quickly, some of my meetings cannot take place due to this lacking feature and internal restrictions of comepanies
Ditto we would like to use this instead of buying into Zoom
That would be a great feature

That would help a lot with our clients who want us to conduct planned IRL workshops on Teams. It is pretty moderate on functionality right now.

Other products such as Zoom and Adobe Connect already support this functionality which is a real "killer application" on the e-schooling and training market.
Please allow for breakout rooms where we can enable participants to move themselves, if possible.
With the increased remote workers nation-wide, this would be a huge benefit for instructor-led courses for training and development in my company.
Yes, Teams really should do this since Zoom has that feature now and it works really well on there. Allowing the presenter and moderators to push messages out to each breakout room is key, also. For example, I was in a Zoom where the presenter put us into breakout rooms, and then sent a message every 5 minutes saying to switch to the next person. And after 20 minutes the presenter put up a message saying that they are about to bring everyone back into the main room together.
Zoom has this option. We want in Teams as well, please

This functionality currently exists in Webex and Zoom, to host break out sessions.
Could you please let us know what's the timeline for this feature? We're moving to virtual workshops considering the situation and the team is currently promoting Zoom because of this feature, whereas we all have and use Teams on our daily meetings...

If you want to compete with Zoom it is a crucial bit of functionality to have to collaborate in teams
yes - if you want to compete with Zoom, this is a MUST

All I hear is Zoom has break out functions and Teams doesn't so let's use Zoom....

I currently unfortunately have to advise our university to move away from Teams (although we have a licence) and go for another licence for our teaching because of the lack of this feature.

can only agree, that's why everybody is moving to zoom. Should be integrated ASAP
need of hour ...are there any timelines

The lack of this feature is the reason why people prefer Zoom voor Education purpose. It's urgent indeed!
