Introduce breakout room functionality
We have a business requirement for breakout rooms with live events. The idea is pretty simple - we plan to use live events to host internal staff training webinars and as part of that, at times we will ask for small groups of people (typically 4-5) to go away into a breakout room and come back to the group with their answer/idea.
We would like to see this functionality be introduced to Microsoft Teams for not only live events but also video calls. This would provide feature parity with pre-existing tools such as Zoom, WebEx and many more which would be a cost saving for us.
Features we would expect as part of breakout rooms would be as follows:
- Option to assign users to a specific room
- Option to random assign users to a specific room
- Presenters/producers can switch between rooms
- Breakout rooms have a time limit for how long they last before everyone being bought back to the group
- The ability to appoint a moderator of a breakout room
- The ability to record each and every room separately (This is a dream ask)
Happy to provide more detail as required.
Thank you for your continued feedback. The feature team is actively working on this highly requested feature. We are testing the first release that will have the ability for meeting hosts to create breakout rooms, assign the users to the rooms and call them back to the main room. Please see our roadmap for current status here: https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Teams&searchterms=65332.
Unfortunately, its not easy to find on the roadmap. I used the search feature to find it. Here's the direct link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=In%20development&searchterms=breakout
I checked the roadmap link mentioned above and this breakout room project is not mentioned
Is there a way to show more than one person when sharing screen? We really need this feature for our 2nd graders.
Anxiously waiting for this functionality for our Teams client.
Agreed, you need to add more than one meeting organiser - there seems to be no functionality for this.
This seems to be working - allocating people into break out rooms. We've had an issue where participants don't have any microphone capability in the new room, despite being off mute.
I tried breakout rooms for a training yesterday with a group of about 60 - big fail. Just getting into the general group, the chat function wouldn't work and people couldn't sign in. The instructions for setting up breakout rooms is conflicting. I didn't know you needed to also schedule each channel as a separate meeting in calendar. The YouTube video from Microsoft "How to Use Breakout Rooms" doesn't mention this part. I'm not sure why/haven't figured out but many participants couldn't see the icons to navigate to the channels even when their screens were minimized.

This only seems to be available to meeting organisers - there needs to be the ability to let someone else manage this or delegate this.

Please make sure Breakout rooms functionality works in a meeting organised within a team/channel. This is particularly important for education. It's pointless to have breakout rooms that do not work in a team for class where it will most definitely be needed more than any other place.

This is why I use Zoom. How can you still not have such a fundamental and necessary feature like this enabled. Teams conintiues to disappoint. FAIL!
Please ensure breakout rooms works properly across all clients, including Apple and Linux.
Please speed up the process! This must have been done already during the summer since you saw the trend and demand in spring from others and school-work everything is back at full-pace after summer holidays and you are still working on it and hoping it to be ready by latest early Q4. I hope you don't delay it and speed it up to offer already within this month! I'm even up for beta version release as clumsy as it is.
We seem to have a preview release of these, but they don't seem to be available in Channel meetings. Will they be added to Channel meetings soon?

Will breakout rooms work on a meeting within a channel?

If you need help testing, our tenant would be happy to test it as we've been waiting for this and maybe this will finally get some people off of Zoom and back into Teams for meetings!

This is great news that its so close, our business is looking to continuing with a lot more Working from Home moving forward, so this will really benefit me and my team with creating more interactive virtual learning environments. The roadmap looks to state 'October 2020' will this likely be before the end of October or is it hoped this will be available by the beginning?
Will there be to option to sneak preview this feature as with the new Meeting Features that were released in the last month or so?
Can't wait for this!

Break out rooms need to be supported in Team Meetings that are associated with a channel. We have been guided to use Channel meetings wherever possible to make it easier for people to see the chat and files associated with the collaboration.
can you confirm if this breakout room feature will be available for the enterprise F3/E3 account holders?
This sounds great! The sooner we have capability to easily use breakout rooms in MS Teasm is greatly appreciated. We are shifting our clinical healthcare education work online given the pandemic. And breakout rooms are key to optimizing active learning for learners. Thanks in advance.
