Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.

Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.

The ability to globally turn of Chat History as can be achieved with currently with Skype for Business would be a good option. Conversation if stored, come under Freedom of Information Act requests and also causes us issues with GDPR for the right to be forgotten.

There needs to be an ability to delete private chats between two people as this is leaving far too much clutter in the tool.

This could be a complete deal breaker for us. We currently require all Skype chats not to be saved and have no chat history available. This should be an option as it is in Skype for Business. I would imagine several companies would be in the same position.

This would be a need to have. If you spawn a conversation in the wrong room and you need to move it to another.

Deleting a chat, post, message is a function of the TEAMS settings. It can be set to not allow any deletion, deletion only by Owner, deletion by all. Maybe your TEAMS settings need a change?

Confusing and Cluttered application. How about a simple messaging app like Skype. Oh wait you deprecating that for this POS. Can't delete previous messages/conversations, really? Did you even focus group this? You obviously no nothing about human nature. People say they want more but they actually want less. For example, take a look at your TV remote the next time you are sitting on your couch. How many of the 150 buttons do you actually use? Probably 4, Power, channel up/down, volume up/down. Maybe input to. Do not try to fix what is not broken. Do not EOL Skype.

My office uses Skype for Business and we all hate the way chat works. That led me to testing Teams as a possible replacement. Unfortunately, the inability to delete chats is a deal breaker for us.

Working as a supervisor in a call center not having the ability to delete a chat can be a bit overwhelming when you have 40 to 50 different chats and can't do anything but hide it.

Living in the UK - there are conversations that need to be deleted due to GDPR - How are microsoft looking in this regards.

Please add the delete function to Teams, at least for private chats. Any chat between two or more people that is not participating in a Team chat.
I don't want, or need to know that someone a year ago said, "Hey you busy, can I call you?"

There are mistake made all the time in our teams and double posting sometimes, this is really a mess, I agree, team owner should have control over post.

+100 to this request if I could...what reason is there for private messages between two people to be not deleted? Especially, if both private parties want the chat to be deleted? My company won't implement MS Teams till we have this option. Currently, we are on a legacy system that does not retain chat history...which is what everyone wants. What was said in private chat should remain private (not hidden or archived) which means allowing private parties to delete said messages.

The option for Admins to delete private chat threads should not be "under review" because, as noted in previous comments, it is actually a legal obligation for many enterprises operating internationally. Whether or not chat threads are recorded by default, in fact, should probably be a standard option at the tenant-level (admin) and/or team-level (owner) to accommodate varying retention regimes. Aside from the legal reasons, the ability for admins and team owners to clear old chat threads (or parts) is just a practical usability necessity to keep things tidy, both while projects are active and when eventually archived.
