Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.
I posted a comment here... and was able to delete it. :-|
My “team” is still holding on to Skype for as much as we can exactly because of the lack of this feature. At least on Skype old chats were saved within outlook. Why can’t you do the same?
Please update Team so we have the ability to delete chats!!!
Make hide "one click". In other words let the user "close" (Hide) the Chat with 1 click. Don't make the user do 2 clicks to clear out "clutter". Active chats are hard enough to keep track of because by middle of the day they scroll off the screen. 1-click Hide would allow the user to keep active chats on the screen and not have to scroll to find them.

Agreed, all this does is clutter the page.
Agree. Deletted invait need to be deletted.
just ask MS every day to extract your conversation history under the EU law, they'll change their mind and implement this feature promptly.
make it more like Skype
I get this request all the time from my team asking how to clean up up the chat window. it gets to cluttered. There should be the ability to open a new clean chat window. Please add this to the tool.
I get that there are legal/HR reasons to keep the chats around. If hiding is the only option, then truly hide it. If I hid a chat between me and John Smith and then a few days later start one up again, I don't need to see the past conversation at all.
The biggest annoyance right now is that I'm training people on things like Teams and other O365 stuff, but I'd like to clean up my chat window. If I use an employee that I've chatted with before in my Teams chat demo, everyone gets to see the history.
So far I've just emptied the screen by putting a bunch of '.' in 10+ messages to push everything off the screen.
we need to be able to delete chats; full chats not indiv messages; i have too many chats i dont even need anymore

Would like to be able to delete and all chat messages
We need to have the ability to delete Teams Chat. Using AV software that utilizes Teams for meetings. After meeting is complete, all individuals can see the chat that has been conducted from previous meetings.
I want to delete chats permanently not just hide.

Fairly simple there are some things that I now simply will NOT discuss in teams period. The soft delete is nonsense. If you don' t have a hard delete there is no reason PERIOD except that you do NOT want it in there.
No legal reason, no e-discovery, you've made a design choice.
Stop the excuses just tell the truth you don't want to add delete.
There are legal reasons to keep these messages, but there may also be leagal reason to delete these messages. If not by user, at least by management please.
The current “hide” is not good enough - if I have a confidental discussion previously with someone and now someone is looking over my shoulder as I ask the same person an unrelated question, they will see they can see our most recent discussions - need to be able to have a chat without our previous chats showing on the screen

Hiding a conversation is not deleting it. I suppose clicking on the contact again is another way of saying you undeleted or restored the message thread?
