Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.
Many companies need to keep paying for competitive product for chats, despite that they have Teams as part of O365 deal. This decreases the O365 value. When I ask people, why you need another product S, they answer: there is no X button on the right of conversation, to click it after conversation is done. It actually does a hide, but its one quick click instead of clicking-moving cursor-clicking too long menu navigation just to close 1:1 "SMS type chat". Same as Delete quick button in Outlook. Conversation appears again only if anyone continues it, unless "Leave" is selected, then it will not.
Next, it needs nested conversation in group chat, so we have one chat line per inquiry and only if interested others may dig in deeper into many answers and further questions.
Next, if shall sort chats into "Personal chats" area, for 1:1 "SMS type" chats.
And third, it shall be easy to setup message retention for any chat. You set 7 days for personal chat and can have peace of mind too old info will not stay for too long time. All messages can stay on server for legal retention time, where/if required, but only admin has access.
Just these done would remove the cost of extra product for company chats.
Fine! keep the chats on the server side for legal reasons!, but for the love of god, allow me to keep my client side clear of any messages, hide is not good enough, should not allow anyone else to snoop on my computer or with my logon.

This is a very important feature to have. As a meeting organizer I should be able to delte other users' comments. Sometimes they are inappropriate and need to be deleted.

Being able to look back at important chats in a plus, but sometimes a whole conversation is nonsense - just humans reaching out to other humans. Users should be able to delete their chat history. But, employers should be able to control a user's ability to delete their chat should a need arise. So, I would vote for it to be a feature you can turn off or on for a particular user as needed. Just like I can turn off or on the ability for a user to forward his or her email. Powershell would make it easy to set large groups in one swoop if the need arises.
DPIA points to lack on deletion control ! Please implement asap !
Likewise, we would like to know whether there are any updates to this. Many thanks

Any updates? It's been nearly a year. Thanks.
Do you know if there as been some updates about this since last June ?
Thank you very much

I would down-vote this feature.

this seems to be already a while this request is in backlog (>06/2020).
Are there - one year later - some enhancements on this sector?
Having empty chats, because of company RDP's, does bring up again this issue.
Thanks for any infos.
My sister's company (a global law firm) has this same chat tool. They have a 24-hour auto-delete feature. Why can't we?!

Need this ASAP

I've been managing Exchange (since Pre-5.5.)for DECADES along with Skype for Business since the first versions. for 5,000 to 12,000 user installations. Being at a company with O-365 and outsourced IT, there is no visibility or interaction with admin staff.
Teams is horrible from the unintuitive UI all the way through lack of removing conversation history. There are also no sound effects for when other parties are typing in a chat. Meeting start pop-ups hide too quickly and then I have to go into calendar to join a meeting. I can go on and on. You have got to do something about these issues as this is not evolution; It is not revolutionary.
This is just becoming very awkward now. Perhaps everyone should shame Microsoft into action on social channels. Give their marketing team a challenge.

It's a bug to be unable to control own chat history, please fix it!
It's frustrating to be unable to control my own chat history. All the other messengers allow users to delete the history. I don't get what the legal issues are related to this feature. When can we see the progress ? It's been more than a year since it's on the backlog.

Just click the ellipses next to the thread name and select “Hide”. Note that we cannot provide a “hard delete” due to eDiscovery and other legal reasons. This item is still being reviewed by the feature team.

Es mejor, que quiten la opcion de enviar mensajes privados!! Es mucho desorden y asi nos evitamos problemas..

I made a chat group of 4 people and now when work is completed, we would like to close that chat group. Apparently that doesn't seem to work There is an option to remove the participants, till there are only 2 participants left and the "X" does not show. Am hoping this feature of "delete private chat threads" will include group chats as well.
Any comments from the Administrator?
Looks like this has been very well explained over the past year........
Maybe a short reply from Alex would be nice.
Where is this at? Still on a drawing board, tucked away in the code, shared with the team or just on this board?
Anything would be nice.
