Follow and unfollow conversation thread
This idea is not new. Currently we have a lot of unnecessary notifications and i believe we need flexible options to either get rid of them or setup banner/alert. And we already got "Follow channel" option in the latest update:
I think we should go forward and improve conversation/thread notifications. It's very annoying when you replied to the conversation and then it becomes spamming. You have no option to unfollow this conversation and keep receiving notifications. From the other hand, there are conversations where you either not mentioned directly by @ tag or not replied yet but want to get notifications about new comments. I think that facebook concept works well here - you can either get notifications or stop notifications (in other words, follow conversation or unfollow conversation).
The feature team is still working away on this feature request. No new updates at this time.

Even Yammer has that functionality ;-) Yes, would love to see this feature!
Good idea! Basically i don't want to save message or reply to this, i just want just to track updates and be aware. Also it's obvious that nobody going to tag me personally so i won't be notified.
I think we need this feature, just like in Facebook - https://www.iphonelife.com/blog/30704/how-follow-conversation-thread-facebook-without-commenting
Sometimes a conversation completely derails from what I originally replied to. It would be nice if there was an option to unfollow a notification, even if I've participated in the conversation or if it is in a channel that I have enabled notifications for.

sometimes, i want to follow up some conversation thread instead of the whole channel.

Our company is broken up into separate desks that support different accounts. We have set up each desk as its own chat channel. I typically only work within three channels. Each conversation within those channels is more or less its own question or statement from our team, then we can see replies to it. Since there aren't really notifications per conversation, it's hard to tell when someone posts a new message when the program is in the background.
It would be convenient to enable/disable the ability to show a portion of the message that you are being notified of in the notification pop-up.
This would be helpful in screening the message to determine its priority prior to breaking out of another application and into Teams.
