Make "Follow this channel" the default setting.
Usual Microsoft lack of UI intuition.
Channels should be followed by default with the user unfollowing it if they wish.
Thank you for the feedback. Changing the default setting is under review by the feature team, and your feedback is very useful as they are evaluating.

Yes. Big source of confusion for new Teams users.
This is currently a major flaw with teams. What this has done is make people misuse the important flag to send out notifications, which is more frustrating because you can't skip those notifications at all.

Seems like a no-brainer. Which of course is why they won't do this.
This is a major problem with Teams, in my opinion. We almost quit using it altogether - before we found this setting.
Also make it visible (icon?) that you follow/join a channel. It was not clear that I didn't receive notifications, because I wasn't following a channel.
In Slack it is much clearer how to join/leave a channel. Never had a problem with Slack, but in Teams I was confused.
I wish there was at least a user setting that let this happen. It's annoying that I get added to a team and if I forget to follow it I will miss out on a day or more of posts until I remember to follow it.
Barring that, they should default to opt-out
Channels now have their own notification settings but they're currently opt-in. They should recursively follow the notification settings for the Team, then the global settings.
