Good news. The feature, Unified Presence (aka same presence as Skype for business) is rolling out.
The feature update has started rolling out to customers.
PLEASE NOTE: Not everyone will receive the update at the same time.
You can read more about the March releases on the Teams Blog – https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-Teams-Blog/What-s-new-in-Microsoft-Teams-April-update/ba-p/179801
Thank you very much for all your feedback.

I think this is MUST have feature.
All apps used for the communication such as Teams, Skype for Business should sync status with each other.
status is shown as idle even when i am using the computer, i think that may need some fixing

Agree with Francisco - Should integrate exactly like skype for business,a nd act the same.
Agree. Skype for Business has the ability to update automatically based on our outlook calendar, why can't Team do the same?

Currently the online/active icon next to your name seems to be on a timer. It would be nice if there were some settings, so it doesn't look like I am away every five minutes. Jabber only puts you in away if you lock your screen, are on a call, or have a meeting scheduled in outlook. It seems as if Microsoft Teams is timing out, which is inconvenient for our setting.

When change status on Teams change status Skype too

When actively using another application and Teams up on a second monitor, I can see it set me as away. Even just waving the mouse cursor over the Teams window will turn it green again, but it should remain green regardless of the active application unless the PC as a whole is idle.
I've also found that there is a delay from Skype for Business messages when someone is messaging from skype into Teams.
As mentioned below, chat saving should be optional if a user wants this or not.
IF PRESSENT! Not all my users use windows or mac, so linux users do have no presence in s4b .
Why is this not planned? Presense as it is doesn't work well/correctly.
This is a great idea
Chats initiated from Skype users are not saved in Teams, nor are they saved as conversation history in Outlook. If you are going to allow chats between the apps, save them too.
Microsoft Teams has an own availability status. This should be updated according to the availability status from the Calendar and also from Skype. In my opinion, availability should be a generic concept related to the user. Either the user is available, or he/she is not. Regardless of the app he/she is using.
I agree, most modern chat apps don't update your status based on whether a window is displayed or not.

Merge functionality of SfB into Teams and then get rid of it. (Obv by functionality I mean PSTN calling, etc.)

It's very like Yammer, forum lines, with answer for every message just under the message itself, or new separate line for new messages.
I would like more of a chat presence like Skype for business
Given this is a business product, and O365 business options use Lync / Skype for Business we need Lync connectivity and presence, not Skype.
With some clients they will not allow skype connections in through their firewalls but they WILL allow Skype for Business connections
I am surprised this has not gained more support. Skype for Business set status based on the computer status and via outlook calendar integration. When I am using my computer I am not "away". This makes it very hard to know who is available for instant chatting.
Using Computer = Active
Computer Idle = Away
Computer off & Mobile active = Away, On Mobile
In Meeting from Outlook = Busy
Presenting Screen = Do not Disturb
