Custom Status Message API
One can currently set a custom status message for when someone sends you a chat or mentions you in a channel. Please provide an administrative control to disable this by policy. And/or allow for the custom status message to be cleared/set by PowerShell or Graph API.
Use case: In the EDU sector students can (and do) abuse this with inappropriate status messages. Currently, the only control is an Acceptable Use Policy, and to clear it requires taking control of the account and manually clearing it.
It would be very helpful to have an API to read and update the custom status message. Especially since there is currently no location function (as in https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/33331429-share-live-location).
If we had an API for custom status messages, we could have custom software to automatically set the status to "Home Office" when connected to home WiFi or whatever trigger, and reset to "On Site" when at work. This would be a workaround for the missing location functionality.
I see the following options as convenient:
- Allow to update such information to the desired users.
- Allow to reset such information to the desired users.
- Protect from the console that the user can write anything in this information.
I wish I could vote for this one million times. using status message to create private student chat spaces has become a big problem for us. An admin control is needed - I would simply disable this feature district-wide.
If you can set it from Power Apps or Power Automate, you can share the situation by changing the status message with the morning greeting.
Please implement it
It would be great to set the presence and status message via Graph API.
Hoping they'll release it soon!
Let me know.

You can add the ability on Microsoft Teams admin center
to disable Set status message with policy on users.
Yes please. We have students abusing this (vulgar messages and also using mentions in status messages as a means to chat). We have private chat in Teams is disabled by policy for students, but they've discovered they can @ mention each other in statuses to essentially bypass the restriction - the notification takes them to the chat interface which they can't type into, but the status notifications deliver messages into the chat interface.. Would love to disable the ability to set custom statuses for problem users by policy, and clear them if necessary.
