Disable chat temporarily during meetings
Please allow meeting organizer to temporarily disable chat during a meeting.
We often have people so focused on the chat, they don't pay any attention to the actual meeting.
We'd love to be able to turn off chat at the beginning of the meeting, and then turn it back on at an appropriate point.

As Teachers, we need to be able to use Teams as a multi-function tool - with control over your classes' activities. Having the ability to disable chat (like the mute button ) is fundamental to our class management. Please make this happen soon! - In fact, a better education version of TEAMS would not be a bad idea, with the teacher having the ability to totally control every aspect of the meeting.
This would be a very useful option. We are currently trying to work out how to record lessons during meetings and stop students from being able to access them before we change the permissions on the recording to stop them from accessing it. Recording are currently saved in the chat section of a calendar meeting which is not ideal, so having the ability to disable it will allow us to control when chat is taking place and will allow permissions to be safely changed on recorded meetings.

hi is there a way I can disable the meeting chat option( type/send option) for my son who uses MS team for online class? Is there a way to do it as a team member? The disable function is there for Admins to configure but it disables chat for all students which the teacher doesnt want to do.
Hi! We now have this feature, but it does not apply if the meeting was planned in a channel. It would be easier for teachers to disable the chat for a specific meeting that has been planned in a channel to do so in the meeting options.

Please prioritize this - this seems compelling from an effort to deliver / value unlocked perspective.
I have just started using Teams (previously used Zoom, so much more suitable for teaching) at my new school, and I cannot believe this has not been sorted yet - such a basic requirement to maintain focus. Come on, Microsoft, step up to the mark! It's end of Jan now and this has been going around on forums since May last year!
It would be great if the disable option under the meeting policies would work. Currently students have a policy assigned to them where 'Allow chat in meetings' is set to disabled in the Teams Admin Center. However students are still able to chat in meetings and reply to chat when a meeting has been ended.
Better control for Team owners during meetings would also be great, as suggested in the original idea.
this would be great if it's become available quickly.

We need to be able to disable chats in whatever meeting we create. I am and ESE teacher who sees difference groups throughout the day, I use the calendar to create my Teams meetings as opposed to the channels.
Yes, completely. A teacher should be able to turn on or off students' access to chat. Please let us know once this has been done.

The chat during the meeting is very distracting to students, especially the younger ones. With the ability to stop others from presenting, unmuting, unmuting others, and kicking others from the call, I am surprised that disabling chat during a meeting is not available. It has been a struggle to maintain a class meeting and monitoring the chat activity at the same time. Please consider making a disable chat option in a meeting a priority. Teams is our schools go to platform for remote teaching!
Yes, absolutely. The teacher should be able to turn off chat at the beginning of the meeting then turn back on when lessons are finished. I have students having long conversations throughout the lesson. We have no way to monitor when they are home!!!
So is there no way for us to shut this off right now?
We definitely need this function in the middle classroom setting.

We have multiple assemblies planned, and need this function to be able to toggle chat on\off during the meeting.
Please add this function. This is an absolute necessity for schools.

Please go for it as remote-learning really needs it.
If schools are going to continue to use this platform - you need to be able to disable chat locally.
