Your team has reached the maximum number of private channels
Today we attempted to create a new private channel and received the following error "Your team has reached the maximum number of private channels".
OMG everyone at my company is going to KILL ME. I moved our entire organization off Slack to Teams and to streamline communication we went with a company Team and then inside that Team we create private channels for targetted audience communication. This was done to avoid having to create multiple teams then add everyone who would ever have to communicate with any of the channels inside the team.
In slack they had no limitation on the number of public/private channels and as of today I was told by MS that I am limited to 30 private channels. I can add up to 200 standard channels but that is not going to work as most channels need to be limited to a set of individuals.
MS Please help!
Story Form: As an administrator of teams, I would like to allow more than 30 private channels(unlimited ideally) inside a team, so that our organization is able to utilize a single team for entire company collaboration by allowing users to create private channels to limit the target audience.
We are hitting this limit on some of our sites as well. Please up the limit Microsoft. People are saying they regret switching from slack.
Despite encouraging transparency through public channels, we hit the private chan limit quickly due to users starting out their Teams journey by creating nothing but private channels. We were able to convince some users to make use of private chats but others kept asking for private channels. This needs to be addressed with consideration for many of the other related issues previously mentioned here.

Exactly - Microsoft: 30 private channels per Team is an embarrassing limitation which does NOT fit to the age-of-data!
WHAT ON EARTH HAVE YOU BEEN THINKING??

@Microsoft Teams Development team. Is anyone listening to these comments. Why on earth would you have limitation of 30 private channels. And to make matters worse, why are "Deleted" channels counted toward that!
This needs immediate resolution. Why this random limit?
I need 140 private channels. This is limiting my ability to function in a K-12 educational environment. The channels must be private; public will not work. Please align your service model to the one offered by Slack. Thank you.
This limit is stopping me moving my students from a different platform to Teams.
We really need to increase the limit, even if its to 100 for now. Thank you

We are looking to use Teams for a course with 1300 students and would like to use private channels so that they can work in smaller groups of say 4, ie would need 325 private channels. If there is going to be a limit then set it at 1000

We need to create more than 30 private channels per MS Teams Team, please increase the limit.
I like to have a private channel for each student to communicate directly with me (since you removed the chat option). This is not possible with the current limit (class of 60 students total) so I have to divide them in two and post everything twice. They're also unable to participate in conversations online between these two groups. Very frustrating!!!

Spoke with a dept within Microsoft and they advised MS Teams rolls out updates weekly. They state that Increasing the 30no Teams private channel limit has been suggested by many and they are looking to carry this update out soon. Since 2019 we have been complaining. Surely they would of done this by now?

1 year. No reply from MS. That's typical!!!
I've had the same problem as most people here. I moved ALL my university students across to Teams to create Private groups - i need about 40. And have just hit this problem. I'm not sure how i'm going to solve it yet and it seems like a completely unnecessary limitation.

Can't to create more than 30 private channels is indeed a weakness of MS Teams & it is inconvenient for our company. Currently users are asking us to switch back to the old system. Please help me create a new update so we can create more than 100 private channels.

I'm so annoyed that this issue has had no response from Microsoft. Last year I moved everyone over from Slack to MS Teams but now looking at moving back because of the Private Channels limit. We make a Team for each of our clients and some of the major departments in our group. We've already run out of 30 channels and it counts the deleted ones! So you cant even delete a channel and get the "credit" back to your total. It's a ridiculous limit and needs to be changed. I guess well have to go back to slack if I dont see a Microsoft update.

Hi, the same issue, we currently in transition from Slack towards MS Teams but this private channel limit....
This was a limitation of Teams we were not aware of and we implemented a workshop where private channels were required for teams and team leaders to work together. We rolled out the program and started adding these private channels until we hit the ceiling of 30 in the channel. We had to quickly regroup and figure out what we needed to do. We ended up having to break up the program into 2 separate teams to get enough channels. This caused a lot of unnecessary confusion. Not to mention that some people could see some channels and others could not. I am not sure if that was an implementation issue or a Teams issue. Regardless now we are concerned we may eventually have to break up the group into 3 teams as we move forward with the workshop. The number of private teams allowed per channel must be increased to provide the ability to use this feature at a corporate level.

Hey Microsoft, Ignite 2021 - All the big talk about "Shared Channels". Why not increase the limit for "Private Channels" first?

Agree this is a major limitation! if a 200 channel limit needs to exist (including deleted) options should be available to either reduce the deleted channel retention period to zero or 24hrs to allow the ability to reclaim channels.
For our usage we use a channel as a central war room for major incidents, on resolution the channel deleted, but having the 200 channel limit with 30day retention doesn't make this a viable option to cover our needs. Having the ability to not have a retention for deleted channels or a significantly reduced setting would.
