Reply to specific message in chat on desktop app
Having the ability to reply to specific messages in a chat on the desktop app. This is available on mobile today.
Thank you for your patience. We are thrilled to that replying to a chat message in the desktop client is now available as part of our Public Preview. It is expected to roll out to the public ring over the next several weeks.
For details on switching to the Microsoft Teams Public Preview version, please see : https://aka.ms/TeamsPublicPreview.
We look forward to your preview feedback!
"This is something that would be very useful on individual conversations, being able to quote messages you sent a while back."
Strange that this feature misses from individual chats.
Need this very much ^^
The biggest thing missing by using the > notation is the original author name, and timestamp. That information is very useful in a really long chat.
It's what works in nntp based news and decent mail clients since 20+ years. Why can't we have this here?
Function to allow replies to particular comments
Currently, a chat with a person is simply an on going conversation. However, that conversation could cover multiple differing topics. Once a chat with a person has been started, it'd be nice if you could start a topic under the conversation so that all replies are grouped together. Also, including the ability to expand/collapse all topics so that you can quickly go back to a topic that you're looking for.

This is so essential as the topics change quickly in a conversation and it is necessary to specify which message you are responding to. This is one of the best features of WhatsApp and has been there a very long time. Would be great to see it in Teams.
I have a running chat with my boss, and we talk about all sorts of things, often all at the same time. He'll ask me a question, and I'll be updating him on what I'm working on that day, and the conversation goes like this:
Boss: OK so where did you put the XX file?
Me: it's on the software drive. Today i'm mostly going to be working on project X.
Boss: that's fine, where are you up to?
Boss: I can't find the file on the drive. Are you sure?
Me: Status of the project is X. Going well. Can I have some more info on what to do next?
Me: I put it in the 'Some ****' folder
Me: also I need the tracking spreadsheet
Boss: still cant' see it
Boss: OK, will do
Boss: Sorry, that was 'will do' on the tracking spreadsheet. What was the other question?
Me: next actions on Project X
Me: for the spreadsheet that is. Did you find the file?
Boss: wait the spreadsheet or the file I wanted in Software?
Me: OMG will they just make threaded conversations already

We strongly need this feature not only in channels but in chats and especially in group chats.

Please provide an option to quote a message (like skype) or reply to a message in a one-to-one chat. There is no way just now to reply to specific question/message when doing lengthy chats.

This is something that would be very useful on individual conversations, being able to quote messages you sent a while back.
currently, we're using Skype for internal communications . . . the quote feature of the old desktop Skype version keeps getting worse and worse, almost not existent in the "new" Skype app (you have to highlight the text, right click then hit Quote instead of the old fashioned Ctrl + C Ctrl + V of the old Skype to quote the user and date stamp.
Imagine my horror when I discovered Teams has no quote functionality at all . . . it's currently the single reason why we're not using Teams in our organization.
The ability to mark messages Important and format text is awesome, but to not be able to quote in a multi-person chat is a ridiculous oversight, someone is clearly not thinking.
YES! Please add this feature. It would be really nice to have threaded conversations in chat just like the conversations in channels.
I also would like to have a quote button that it does what is needed
They just updated Teams for the tag/mentions in group chats. Looking forward to thread replies next!
It exists in Teams within groups conversations. However it's missing in individual conversations...
1. User should be able to tag people in group chat as they do in channels.
2. User should be able to do thread reply for messages in group chat
Able to reply to a specific message like how WhatsApp does.

Typical usage of chat is as an asynchronous mode of communication with multiple questions and answers interleaved in an ad-hoc fashion.
The ability to respond directly to a colleagues message via some form of quoting is essential. Without the ability to quote a previous message, it's very hard to provide context to a reply.
With the cut and paste functionality currently less than 100%, this lack of quoting functionality is doubly galling.
Threads under replies would definitely be helpful here, that way conversations can flow in whatever direction and people can reply to specific comments directly.
I also use this workaround screenshot, cut the apecific image and past in the chat box and type the answer to it.
