Ask to join should "ask to join"
In meetings there is an "Ask to join" option in the drop down for invitees who have not yet joined. It doesn't "ask" it calls them, this is very intrusive and can be confusing for somebody who is actually on their way or ending up some other meeting.
Instead the button should do what it actually says, "Ask." Maybe it could pop up a banner reminder that says "Meeting name has started click here to join."
Alternately change the name of the link to "Call now."

Please also review this idea about cancelling a "Request to join." https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/41636845-teams-meetings-allow-a-cancel-option-when-clickin

I could not agree more! I didn't realize I was actually calling kids during a meeting...!!!

Totally agree, it should just ask user to Join in polite way (popup or message) instead of calling them. there can be a seperate option for "call now".

I totally agree. I found this thread after "accidentally" discovering that 'Ask to join' did not actually do what it was suggesting it would, and in fact sent an obtrusive call out to the participant I was trying to alert. The current execution of the feature is... HORRIBLE, most respectfully :).
I agree with others, this should really just be a pop-up notification to the recipient reminding them of the meeting and an actual "Request to join". Personally, I see no reason for a call - but if it is truly useful, then that should be a separate option from an "Ask to join".
Also, on a call option if that will continue to be provided, there should also be an option to "cancel" the call out. Once I unintentionally started the call, I had absolutely no discernible way of ending it.

funny, I have used this feature many times as the meeting host and thought it did just what you are proposing here, so yes, I like the banner display of "Meeting name has started click here to join."

also force them to call into the meeting - ie. don't allow Teams to call them. then we don't have to listen to their voicemail greeting in the middle of the call (if they don't pickup in time).

This got me again today. I had forgotten that it doesn't actual do what it says. Please fix this.
