Reverse the current "Reply" button, and "Start a conversation" box, for a "Reply" field, and a "Start New Conversation" button
Something is wrong with the current setup.
Myself and others are continually starting a new conversation when we want to reply to the current thread, and vice versa.
"REPLY" should be an empty field box you enter your text reply into, and "Start a new conversation" should be a large button you press to open a new form. Briefly I am checking this thread, and finding 7 uses of New Conversation, with 22 Replies. Majority of time, people will be responding to current topics, not creating new ones. Also general practice for microsoft (excel, word, etc) is that the "Create New" is a function that is more intensive, than adding to a current project.

Agree in general, but since there could be multiple conversations within a channel, a single "reply" input box doesn't work consistently.
But at least the "new conversation" input box should be changed to a "new conversation" button.

The problem for me is that when a new reply is added, the conversion does not move up in the window, so the reply button gets hidded. Only the 'start conversation field is show' See attached screen capture

Ah! I was just about to suggest the same thing. I'll add the text of my suggestion below:
My company has recently moved from Skype for business to Teams, and while the Chat tab is great, the Teams tab is a mess. Many of my colleagues continuously add new conversations instead of replying to the previous one, because it really isn't obvious that one should hit the little "Reply" button first.
I suggest that instead of having a button to reply, there should be an open text box beneath each conversation by default, and that the opposite should be done for the "new conversation" text box: replace it with a button. I think that would improve the UX for the more usual of the two use cases.

So many times coworkers are starting new conversations instead of replying to the thread we are discussing which leads to difficulty linking those one off messages that are not attached to the original conversation. I think that if the start new conversation were off to the side in like a little bubble that you literally need to click on to expand and see all of the edit options/emoji/etc would help to alleviate this issue. For example how the Join a team has a little symbol in front of it. A different symbol could be used and once you click it then it would open the text box to start a new conversation.

I came to this site just to add this suggestion, we keep having to delete our new conversaitons because we accidently made them while trying to reply.

Please add a Material-Design-type "+" button for starting a new conversation!

Terrible UI design creates this problem. I suggest you move the 'New Conversation' action to a button. See attached image.
Edit: looks like others have suggested this before me, as well. Obvious solution. Build it already!

In our 4K+ org, I see people doing the mistake of starting a new conversation, instead of replying to the last conversation - ALL THE TIME. It is really, REALLY annoying.
Almost every other #some UI uses a ( + ) button to start a new conversation. -

If you haven't voted for this one, it asks for a drag and drop reparent to a thread option. No matter how good the interface, it will still happen. The reparent solution would fix the issue when all else fails!

Yes totally agree. This is a big pain point.. no matter how much you tell people.
Also, start a new conversation, should have a mandatory subject line - like to have in emails - to give a suiting context to everyone. -

Yes, this is how it should be done. Much harder to mess up the replies, and more consistent with the mobile version making it easier to teach, understand and use across all the platforms.

I was just going to request this. This is a major issue with new people or people who are new to this type of communication.
Can we please do something about this soon.

Please MS - this seems like a minor visual change. The REPLY button should either be made more prominent or the space between REPLY and starting a new Conversation should be increased.

Perhaps a more prominent reply button but also remove the "Start a new conversation..." field and replace it with a button too.
I believe that field is what is confusing people. In a person to person message it works fine but in a group it's unintentionally being confused as an option to continue the latest conversation thread.

Totally agree. As a daily user, I miss it myself sometimes. All that is needed is a more prominent "reply" button.

Ppl are creating new conversations by mistake when replying to a conversation. This is big problem. Next to reply button ..add click on this to reply to this conversation or add " are you sure you want to create a new conversation" during new chat.or highlight and make attractive reply button like blinking ..et
