JAWS is too Verbose when Navigating, Needs Better Tagging
When navigating to an area, it must be clear what it is. No more than a couple of works, like, "Chat List Tab". If it needs special instructions keep them simple like, "Recent, tab to interact with element followed by arrows" Don't make it more confusing than it needs to, make it intuitive.
Here is what the instructions say for teams and what JAWS user hears.
1. Press Ctrl+2 to open the Chat view.
Action: Control + 2
JAWS read, "[removed name],Lauren | Microsoft Teams [removed name],Lauren | Microsoft Teams Chat list NavigationRegion Chat list Chat list Tree view Recent Chats open 1 of 2 To move through or expand items use the Arrow keys. [removed name],Lauren chat content MainRegion message list". Message from [removed name],Ernesto. interesting, just said you reacted. but it did not tell me how. LOL. Sent on Jul 2, 2019 10:45 AM. Press Enter to explore message content, then use Escape to shift focus back to the message.Loading more messages [removed name],Lauren
Yes, it read all of this all at once. And, if you are looking thru all of it, it is a lot of information, and if you miss it one must go through the same process again. Note I edit the last name portion of the text.
- With JAWS, press Ctrl+F6 until you hear: "Chat list.".
Action: Control + F6
JAWS reads, "Chat list NavigationRegion Recent Tab selected 1 of 2"
Hearing extra information makes it confusing to navigate. This extra information is in all of the areas. One starts hearing all of this information, making one parce the information having to work harder.
3.Press the Tab key once, and then press the Up or Down arrow key until you find the chat you want.
Action: Tab
JAWS reads, "Recent Chats open 1 of 2"
Action: Down Arrow
JAWS reads,"To move through or expand items use the Arrow keys.[removed name],Lauren , Available. Last message from you: Ok,, will let you know. . At 1:37 PM. Press space for more options Has Popup"
It is not one area that needs attension but all of them.
I have more issues with Teams, I hope there is not an Accessibilty setting I missed, but this is not a fix either because people don’t know it’s there. And it is something else you have to maintain.
Thanks
