Need ability to enable/disable auto-formatting, markdown.
This is a very basic ability you already have in other Office products, including MS Word. You need to add an option in the settings menu to enable/disable the auto-formatting, "Markdown" function in the compose box.
I'm shocked that this isn't a basic standard feature already. Markdown auto-formatting shouldn't be FORCED on all users. It should be a switchable OPTION, not hardcoded into any app.

+1 to this issue. If I type another SQL table name that gets italicised I'm going to cry.
PLEASE implement this. We use underscores in our GIT branch naming conventions and it always gets converted to italic text and it's slowly driving me insane.
Please consider implementing this option!
The fact I have to use a mouse in some cases to exit a code block just because this auto-formatting won't let go of my cursor is frustrating. For someone that writes in markdown notation, all the time it feels like I fight with the system more than it's helping me.

Two years later and still waiting. I dread the day very soon where we are forced to use Teams instead of Skype. As a chat client, Teams is abysmal. I can't even sort my contacts or order them how I want. What a shame.
We are we forced to IM via an application that can not even correctly copy, paste or send a single line of text. Focus on that first and make this nonsense optional!
Yes! This needs to be an option! I have now countless times unintentionally confused coworkers when referring to database and table names which almost always use underscores instead of spaces in our naming convention (which is not unpopular reading through the internet). Right now I have to consciously hit ctrl+Z (undo) after each markdown sign pair to revert which is tedious and unwanted.
Dear God please. For people in IT, symbols matter. We don't need them to be replaced by useless formatting.
Ok, I have been trolling through pages and pages of user requests for the option to disable markdown functionality in Teams, going back at least 4 to 5 years, and still we are stuck with having to put up with this absolutely horrible functionality. Please, PLEASE, M$ when will you listen to your customer base provide an option to disable markdown functionality in Teams chat? Seriously, this is the most long suffering and frustrating functionality we have ever had to put up with, you would win so much good will with your customer base if you added this function.

It's absurd to call Teams a business offering when M$ can't, or won't, fix basic usability problems like turning underscores into italics. Your interface is from Fisher-Price. Knock it off, and see if you can manage to get basic text working first.
This product isn't priced like a toy. Stop using design principles from Twit and Faecesbook...

Microsoft shouldn't assume that all people typing underscores want them translated into bold, italics or anything else. I have a variable called _v_id_original which is pretty well unsendable in an email.
I am pretty certain anyone who would actually understand how to use the auto formatting characters are probably the ones who hate it as much as I do. There is zero advantage, jut click the rich text and click the bold button. I waste so much time fixing this autoformatting
If you need to escape the Markdown parser for a given sequence of characters enclosing a word, you can try typing the last characters first and then going back to the start and typing the first ones. So if you want to type "__word__" without getting an italicized "word" as a result, you can first type "__" and then move back and type "__word". The parser seems to get lost and stops parsing according to Markdown.

Let users decide whether they want to use some input ability or not.
What is the logic behind of this?
Did MS spent all their moneys buying Nokia and now you'll have design your programs in some kind of sweat shop?
STOP DOING STUPID THINGS!!!
Or users are forced to start using other products than MS.

The help isn't helping.
We can type markdown in Discord and Slack without help and it works great.
At least let us disable this.
Yep. The frustration of trying to type python dunder methods in chat windows is the biggest bug (or worst feature) in Teams. I don't know if the Teams product team reads this thread, but, if you're listening, PLEASE FIX THIS. IT'S STUPID.

On a mac, it is pure hell, see attached! The cursor is completely messed up and there are invisible chars to clean up in front of the cursor. How can the devs and test teams miss this!!!
Yes. Allowing users to disable the real-time formatting would be a leap forward, since Microsoft have repeatedly refused to fix the ridiculously bad UX of their current broken implementation.
Do what you will or what you must, but for the love of all things Holy PLEASE STOP messing with the user input!
I'm sure every Microsoft Teams' programmer loves having someone insistently slapping their hands off the keyboard as they're trying to do work.
BS feature and MS Devs were not smart enough to put an option to disable this dumb idea!
I am working with a lot of __ data fields, now working from home and, unfortunately, Teams is company's choice of communication!
It is so frustrating MS has a lot of dumb ideas adding on top of their product, over and over again. I am having with this for constantly have to CTRL+Z this BS while CTRL+B, CTRL+I or CTRL+U serving the same f* purpose??? Great Scott!
Why isn't it opt-in feature? It is messenger app for business not a social media stuff. Ideally I would like to have inline quote and block quote functionality but formatted only after sending message.
I agree with everyone that it should be an option rather than forced. However, a workaround I have been using is to send those messages as a Code Snippet (Three Dots)->Code Snippet in the format window. No automatic formatting is done in code snippets.
