Delete Team Site without deleting underlying Team or Office 365 group
A SharePoint Team site can be created (or is automatically created) when a Microsoft Team is created (associated with an Office 365 group, in my case).
If we later want to delete that Team site from SharePoint, we cannot do that without deleting the Team and the associated Office 365 group.
We should be able to delete a SharePoint site separately from the Team and or Office 365 group.

I am facing the same issue. We have a TEAM associate to a group, which we want to delete/disassociate.
So according to O365 support team, we cannot disassociate TEAM from original group "AUS - TEST" group. Only way is to delete the team site, which will also delete the group and the site which is related to group, will be affected
That’s why we have created this new group “AUS-TEST1” with the same membership, and were hoping the after deleting the original group (AUS-TEST) rename AUS-TEST1 to AUS-TEST.
But I don’t think deleting the original group and renaming the TEST1 to TEST will fix this issue, since both groups have their own sharepoint site link? Any thoughts?
This will probably never happen because the SharePoint team site where all of the Team's files are actually stored. SharePoint is the framework supporting all of Teams. You delete your team site you are also deleting your Teams' content.
