Introduce breakout room functionality
We have a business requirement for breakout rooms with live events. The idea is pretty simple - we plan to use live events to host internal staff training webinars and as part of that, at times we will ask for small groups of people (typically 4-5) to go away into a breakout room and come back to the group with their answer/idea.
We would like to see this functionality be introduced to Microsoft Teams for not only live events but also video calls. This would provide feature parity with pre-existing tools such as Zoom, WebEx and many more which would be a cost saving for us.
Features we would expect as part of breakout rooms would be as follows:
- Option to assign users to a specific room
- Option to random assign users to a specific room
- Presenters/producers can switch between rooms
- Breakout rooms have a time limit for how long they last before everyone being bought back to the group
- The ability to appoint a moderator of a breakout room
- The ability to record each and every room separately (This is a dream ask)
Happy to provide more detail as required.
Thank you for your continued feedback. The feature team is actively working on this highly requested feature. We are testing the first release that will have the ability for meeting hosts to create breakout rooms, assign the users to the rooms and call them back to the main room. Please see our roadmap for current status here: https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Teams&searchterms=65332.

Microsoft has an “education support center” that has an abysmal disconnection from education centers, oxymoronic. Microsoft has no clue of the School District experience with Teams. Teachers see the break out rooms icon on their Teams screen and that’s all, because you cannot do anything with that icon. It feels MS put it there just to calm people down. It’s the most burlesque and faux move I have seen in the tech companies competition. The same thing with “assignments” and “class”. Teacher cannot use those. We see the icons, but MS doesn’t provide access to teachers, so we cannot create channels, then you cannot add classes and cannot use break out rooms. The experience is depressing. With 30 quiet circles with initials pointing at you (yes, students do not want to turn on their cameras) a normal discussion cannot happen. Teacher goes through the torturing agony of lecturing to the wall for an hour.
Bring it on!
This tool would really help as we pivot to virtual meetings moving forward. THANK YOU!
This would be so useful to us as we are planning meetings that have these needs, and don't want to go the Zoom route
Break out room in its current state leaves the user with a very confusing experience, we as any organisation would like to see similar functionality as zoom which is very user friendly.
I would really, really love to have the option to have "open rooms". Think of an unconference where different rooms have different themes, and you let the participants choose which room to go to, and they are allowed to move around freely.
It's 2020, let people decide themselves what they want to discuss :)
Bitte nicht machen das ist nicht wichtig! Bitte Kümmer Sie sich um wichtige sachen!
We are currently using breakout rooms at our school during virtual learning. Routinely students are not pulled into their rooms, I have to try to put them in by hand. It is hard to create new rooms because the members are randomly populating the list rather than alphabetically. The system kicks people out when they leave a room rather than returning them to the main room. There really is a huge host of problems and I genuinely hope you are working with teachers in real classrooms to find out what issues they are having. As it is, I will not be using breakout rooms any more and I will be creating meetings for students to go to because it is far more time efficient until you figure out these issues. If I was allowed, I would be using Zoom. Just saying. You need to fix this stuff.
Breakout room functionality is a must for better interactive teaching and student experience.
I'm a teacher with 27 students, and trying to incorporate the chat room feature into my instruction. So far it has not worked. I was able to set up rooms, but when starting the groups, 7 of my students remained. Also, when I joined groups to check in, I could not hear them though they could hear each other.
We need to be able to assign people RANDOMLY to break out groups so that we can mix people up in groups.
Ask Zoom how they do their breakout rooms. They work well.

My feedback for the Breakout Groups is...
The user needs to be able to jump between the groups quickly in the same pop out box.
The user needs to be able to post in a chat that goes to all breakout groups simultaneously, rather than having to write it 4 or 5 different times in different chats.
Be able to move attendees to different breakout groups after they have already accepted an invitation to one (this might be functional already...).
Resend an invitation to an attendee, as there has been some issues with attendees never receiving it and staying in the main session with no way to move them out.
Breakout room, Annotentools requires when students share the screen, we cannot show any lines ask any distance pointing onntheir drawing which is zoom. This feature is very much essential for architecture classes because we work with drawings what student prepared in Autocad format and sharing individual design to the mentor.
Meet is having only white board which is separate cannot point any thing on drawing shared by students directly.
As a teacher, it would be helpful to have a timer in Microsoft Teams so that we can time students as they do seatwork or testing.
We use zoom for mediations and use breakout rooms to control confidentiality. Will your new product allow the moderator to keep people in their assigned rooms?
Unfortunately, its not easy to find on the roadmap. I used the search feature to find it. Here's the direct link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=In%20development&searchterms=breakout
I checked the roadmap link mentioned above and this breakout room project is not mentioned
Is there a way to show more than one person when sharing screen? We really need this feature for our 2nd graders.
Anxiously waiting for this functionality for our Teams client.
Agreed, you need to add more than one meeting organiser - there seems to be no functionality for this.
