Introduce breakout room functionality
We have a business requirement for breakout rooms with live events. The idea is pretty simple - we plan to use live events to host internal staff training webinars and as part of that, at times we will ask for small groups of people (typically 4-5) to go away into a breakout room and come back to the group with their answer/idea.
We would like to see this functionality be introduced to Microsoft Teams for not only live events but also video calls. This would provide feature parity with pre-existing tools such as Zoom, WebEx and many more which would be a cost saving for us.
Features we would expect as part of breakout rooms would be as follows:
- Option to assign users to a specific room
- Option to random assign users to a specific room
- Presenters/producers can switch between rooms
- Breakout rooms have a time limit for how long they last before everyone being bought back to the group
- The ability to appoint a moderator of a breakout room
- The ability to record each and every room separately (This is a dream ask)
Happy to provide more detail as required.
We are excited to announce that Breakout Rooms are now generally available for all customers. For more information, please check out our new blog post available here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-blog/breakout-rooms-is-now-generally-available-in-microsoft-teams/ba-p/1968481
Thank you all for your feedback on this highly requested feature.

Is there any training documentation available on how the breakout rooms will work etc?
Please confirm this will be accessible for Business Licensed tenants as well. We have training needs as well.
We really need this to work in channel meetings. So far, the only way to have breakout rooms is a meeting outside a Team channel. This is extremely difficult to implement in an educational setting since all attendees would have to be added manually. When will this be available for channel meetings?

I see that managing the feature is only available for the meeting organizers. In our company the back office is planning the meetings for our trainings. This would mean that they have to create the rooms on forehand, that the trainers can not switch between the rooms and cannot manage them during the training. Or the organizer should be present in the training, which is not a preferred situation.
Why not have this option available for presenter(s) as well?
Zoom enables meeting hosts (in my case, teachers) to divide the larger meeting cohort into small groups, called breakout rooms, for a private chat about something before coming back into the main meeting. Zoom enables this to be done during the class which, when teaching, is really the best way. Teams currently only enables a new channel to be set-up in advance, and the amount of admin this involves is time-consuming. So please can Teams also include the breakout rooms function?
Zoom is also forbidden to use in our company . For virtual training, Break out feature is crucial for us. Can we get the pre-release installation of the Teams with Break out feature?
Unfortunately it will come to late for the current semester :-(
Speed up guys! Losing clients because this feature is not available yet and corporate IT teams don't allow my customers to use Zoom! Don't over engineer it! Release fast, Release often!
Please offer breakout rooms similar to zoom. The channels are confusing and do not work. The meeting organizer should drive this. Attendees get lost and multiple people click "meet now".
Very impatient to have this feature! Looking forward to use this. Thank you!

This is extremely crucial to me. I work as a language teacher, and the classes are just dead without this feature. However, as a part of school policy, I am forced to continue using Teams, although I would very very very happily switch to another program if I could.
In my lessons not linked to my main employment, I use other providers, because I find Teams to be extremely lacking in this.
I cannot tell you how much I'm waiting for the update to drop..
It has been announced that it should drop sometime in October, so I truly hope that will be the case.
Very impatient to have this feature. I had to buy a Zoom Pro licence because I needed it ....

A great feature will be the co-organizer role in meetings. With this option, when you go to breakout rooms, a co-organizer will have the permission to present or change the attendees permission.
Another great options will include a timer when the breakout room start, finish or the possibility to setup a precise time for the breakout rooms to end automatically. Example the meeting start at 10 AM, breakout rooms starts at 11 AM ends at 12 AM.
This can be done by allowing private channels/rooms in a Meeting.
Hi - will there be an option to enable attendees to move between breakout rooms themselves rather than being manually moved? We run large 150 person planning events quarterly and this would be a massive help to enable people to move themselves as the only available tool we have that can do this with breakout rooms is WebEx

Our school has been trying out the breakout room feature and while it has some great advantages, a big disadvantage is that co-teachers have no breakout room button or permissions like the teacher who created the meeting. We have many classes that have multiple teachers in the meeting who are considered presenters. It would greatly improve our ability to help students with special needs if all presenters had permissions beyond those of other participants regarding breakout rooms. Please consider this improvement.
Will there be an option to record breakout sessions?
We have been waiting for this and can now see that it has been postponed to November. Can you please give us some more information?

Now the roadmap says november. We need this feature as soon as possible.
The roadmap is now saying November. Could you provide a bit of an update as there are many of us being asked when this will be rolled out by our institutions. Thanks
