turn off sounds
I want to be able to TURN OFF notification sounds. I don't mind the visual notification, but the sound is very distracting. I want to be able to concentrate on what I'm doing without the constant distraction of the sounds.
Get your act together Microsoft--the global workforce has gone virtual and y'all can't even figure out a simple UX feature?
I notice some people are steering people toward notification settings-- that does not solve the problem described within the original post, as I understand it. The notification sounds need to be turned off while audio for incoming calls and meetings remains unmuted.
When a user visits settings>notification settings>other>notification sounds you can only choose between "All" "Call, mention and chat" and "Off".

Agreeing with other. One should be able to turn off sounds for notifications and let them be on for calls. This isn't currently possible.

Respond Microsoft! commented
So, almost two years after this question was asked, there is still no response from Microsoft? We need to hear calls ring, but the ‘****’ is annoying AF.
I also had to google this :( could not see it in the list.
But the granularity of sound settings sucks, I also want call only!

You can turn off the sound notifications via settings -> Notifications -> Notification Sounds.
BUT: There are too few options: just "All", "Call, mention and chat" and "Off".
For me missing is: "Call only".
These massive amount of "goodbye" messages after team meetings are really awful.
I hope that my busylight and the Teams API will support the sound for incoming calls soon in the way it did for Skype for Business, where I could configure exactly what I needed.
So this is way easier than I thought.
Right click on your volume settings and open up "Volume Mixer".
Find the mixer for teams, and drag that badboy to the ground.
Most annoying notification sound I've ever heard.
Another use case where this is quite annoying - my headset is connected to 2 devices simultaneously. Every time someone writes a message in Teams the annoying "pling" takes over the headset from the other device just to make me listen another 10 seconds of silence, before the audio stream on device 2 continues. Have disabled all Windows notifications and would like to do the same for Teams, except Calls, because of that.
settings > notifications > other > notification sounds > "Off"
How awful is teams??? Pretty awful. I dial in to meeting, but audio is on phone AND computer. Can't mute on computer! When I click "mute all," it mutes people on the computer AND on the phone! Another brilliant experience from the clowns at Microsoft!

Should be able to control sounds based on preferences, to include choosing to have a sound and what the sound is. Choose specific sound or no sound for:
1. Individual Team, Channel, Favorites or Person
2. Pinned Chats
3. Activity Feed sound different that chat/@mention sounds, etc.
Sound for notifications should be able to be muted w/o muting also the phone call tone.
Totally agree. Having sounds for chat messages is really disturbing, whereas a hearing a phone call would be really helpful.
very, VERY, VERY annoying
Your platform sucks, how is this supposed to be professional when we can't get work done when all we hear are bongs through out the whole meeting?
All I see is working on it...Come on Microsoft, where are the definitive answers?!

Having those bings/chimes during a meeting is very annoying and I would love to be able to turn it off during meetings.
As "d h" said, it is possible to switch them off completely. But I also agree with "Geoff" that we need a fourth setting "Calls only" besides "Call, mention and chat".
But i need it to ring on calls. Totally agree the constant Bing, Bing, Bing is terrible. What an awful product.
