Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
1. Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
2. Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
3. The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
4. The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Allowing deletion of private chat threads is on the backlog.

Agree that this should be available. If eDiscovery & other legal reasons are an issue, why aren't you using a similar approach to e-mail where it's archived somewhere behind the scenes.
It's ridiculous that I have to waste a ton of time going through each individual message I've sent and remove them, then still have all the bulk from the other person I can't get rid of.
Is this feature request still under review as stated by Warren over a year ago? Simply ridiculous that you can't delete a whole thread.
The option to delete a whole thread is crucial; hiding the chat is not an acceptable solution because if you start a new chat with the same person the whoe history comes up. Skype doesn't do this so teams shouldn't either
Please don't ask me to 'hide'.. I want to be able to delete chats from Teams after you have forcibly removed Skype from me. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!
It's October 2019, a year after this was raised, and still no response from Microsoft? Very poor MS, you should heed the voice of the customers, there is no legal issue here, just archive the chat if you don't want to delete it totally. At least give people the option to remove from the front end of the app. This is ridiculous and possible the only app in history that doesn't allow chats to be deleted....
Private messages between individuals cannot be deleted because of "eDiscovery and other legal reasons"? Why is it that I can hover over every single individual message I've sent, and click "Delete" then? You definitely made it a pain to script, but I'm working on something to just run in the console to fix.
Privacy is important to me.

Can you provide a way to start a clean chat thread? as the hidden pops up again when making a new chat with the person?
If you can't do "hard" deletes at least have the option of "storage". I can't stand seeing conversations from day one and them popping back in after "hiding" is used. A lot of the conversations are not "legal" issues. Most are mundane talk. Please at least find a solution to store conversations somewhere. Thanks!

Skype had "conversation history" attached to outlook. Conversation history in the chat window was cleared. This seems like a no brainier. MS, WTF? That worked FINE for eDiscovery, why isnt it FINE now?

Previously, I asked how to delete / hide chat history. The answer was that it is impossible.
We are users of Microsoft 365, and there is an admin panel where you can configure policies. Yes, you cannot completely remove the history, but you can partially hide it using the menu settings, namely admin.microsoft.com-AdminCentrs-Teams-Messaging policies
And you need to add your policies name "no chat"
And apply these policies for the right user.
As a result, the chat will be closed, only Voice is available.

Several in our environment would like this. Doesnt have to be deleted from eDiscovery, just cleared for the user to start a new chat thread.

We MUST have the capability to configure the service to automatically delete all chat history for the current session as soon as it has ended. Once the user exits the chat, nothing should remain (even on the back-end).
So here is a real scenario - a group chat is happening with sensitive information being discussed. Someone invites another party to participate but fat fingers the name and invites someone else. They immediately remove said person BUT now that person has 1) notification that they have been added and remove AND 2) they have all the chat history (as that was the selection made upon adding the person).
Privacy supersedes all concerns on potential legal access. What needs to happen here is the ability to remove the viewing of the chat history from someone that was never supposed to be part of the conversation in the first place.
How is security flaw to be corrected?
MS you can do better. The private chat is too cluttering...
Well, it seems like this has still not been addressed. We are told not to use S4B or Slack and need to move to teams. I for one will no doubt just pick up the phone.

You pushed this onto our computers and disabled our email access if we didn't "join". Now it isn't secure. Thanks a lot MS
I totaly agree. with all the suggestions.
For migrating to teams from Skype there should be the option to clean the current private thread.
My users wont be using teams when the know all they type will be visible in the thread forever.
In comparison to e-mail:
When i delete an e-mail it stille is retraceable with e-discovery. So edisovery can not be a reason to not be able to delete the current chat thread.
The same thing could be implemented with the chatfunction of teams
When deletion is not possible then at least there should be something like skype has: a clean chat window and something like a "history button" to manualy search older threads
I also agree in more transparancy on where the threads are beeing stored.

Feature needed in order to remplace Skype to Teams in our company.

Microsoft, this needs prompt attention.
1.) We need absolute clarity about how, when and where private chat histories are stored:
Attached is a screenshot of MFCMAPI exploring the hidden mailbox folder for "Conversation History\Team Chat". As you can see, there is ZERO chat history stored in this location. Yet when Teams is launched for the user, chat history is available. This goes against all of Microsoft's current documentation.
2.) We need control over whether chat history is enabled (at all). Meaning that if an organization desires to use private chats, but does not wish to archive any data, they should be able to do so. The use of a deletion policy is not a viable workaround. The data must not be captured AT ALL if desired.
3.) End users should also be given the ability to delete certain private chat messages (if the organization allows it).
The idea that chats can't be deleted due to eDiscovery is nonsense. We need to have non-persistent private chat the same way we have in S4B. I understand the purpose of not having this for Teams channels, but there should be an option to not save private chat.
