Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.
Please create the function to delete entire chats in order to clean up unnecessary clutter. It's ridiculous that this function does not exist.

Issue has been reported long time ago but is not even on the roadmap currently.
I assume they will not implement this feature before 2022.
Unbelievable what kind of issues gets higher prioritization if you look into the current developments within the roadmap...
Don't get it how this can be in line with DSGVO ?!
I won't be using this chat again until this problem has been solved.
Seems like MS should recruit smarter (streetwise) people

Unbelivable, Skype for Business is a way better.
Not including this basic feature from the launch of teams is ridiculous. Lying to customers about eDiscovery laws like we are idiots is aggravating. Do you remember Skype for business? Were you breaking the law for a decade with that product?
Claiming you have been working on it for 9 months with no solution.... well Microsoft is terrible so I guess that's par for the course.
Since we've been heavily using Teams as organisation communication, its has added significant importance to having the issue resolved.
If the situation is on audit, surely a chat is by no means an official position. Either way, even a simple toggle to hide deleted messages would be a drastic improvement.

One to one chats should be able to be removed , providing both people agree. The issue is some people may use these for audit trails and would be uncomfortable with a chat being removed without their consent
It's time to add this feature!

We have been having discussions at the state agency I work for, specifically regarding security and HR implications. From a security perspective, we operate under very specific guidelines relating to data protection. We are able to provide governance around data usage in a team but, chats are a completely different story.
We are of the opinion that users should be able to clear or hide threads from the viewing area but not necessarily delete the messages.

Any update? Within the edu tenant and covind19 chat is needed. But also the control option from admin side. Bullying is now in school the reason to decide chat on. Or chat off
Please add this feature, we are not allowed to save chats for employees, if they want to delete they should be allowed an option and are not able to use your product just for this basic reason.
This seems like a major missing pain point.

Yes, we'll need the ability to delete chats as well. We'll also need assurances that chats will not be captured by Microsoft. We do not wish to have chat details made available during litigation discovery. As long as this Teams collects and stores chat detail, we will not be able to use this product.
