Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.
+1 , Please add this basic feature.
I don't see a use for it, other than to remove information that could be used against the user.
Another user said something about "working at a very large banking organisation" to which I'd have to say that especially there you'd want to prevent the deletion of chat histories.
If a delete chat history should be implemented, the history including those deleted messages should be able to be restored by the administrator to prevent abuse.
It is absolutely annoying that we don't have a delete chat function in 2020. The last time I was sitting in a meeting with a team we are planning to work with for a new project. My laptop was connected to the beamer and a chat popped up. Accidentally I clicked on it and everyone saw my chat with my colleague about a new software program which will be leading this project. They saw important information before we were even sure to work together.
Please I really want to ask you to provide a delete chat function so that we, working at a very large banking organisation, can guaranteed privacy. It's absolutely not done that this kind of things are able to happen.
We just started using teams, after only a dew weeks my chats are a mess, full of off hand comments and "are you free to talk" type comments. such a mess and a distraction. Totally unproductive.
Why is there NO DELETE FUNCTION? It’s a simple request and there are many people commenting about this, particularly recently. I WANT TO DELETE CONVERSATIONS FOR SPACE SAVING PURPOSES.
Hello Alex ,
I see this thread is oging on since 2017 , and i see your last backlog comment on Jan 24 , does it progressed anywhere?
Teams needs a more straightforward chat feature that allows for quick and disposable private chat. Its a waste of space to keep private chats or team/channel chats around forever including all the clutter of images, gifs, meaningless chatter. Skype for Business chat is much more straightforward, saves to Outlook for a specific period and disappears.
I work for a large organisations and have been testing Microsoft teams. I wish to delete the chat and all the training and help within Teams suggests I can but the functionality is not available. I find this annoying .
Please can this be escalated. During the current Covid-19 outbreak, the use of private chats has gone through the roof. More and more of my users are now asking for this feature as they do not need all the history.
Surly this cannot be a large piece of work? Users can already delete their own individual messages, so the core removal code must be present.
If you are worried about a user deleting other user’s messages in the chat, then at least allow a user to delete "All" of their messages within a private chat, instead of having to go through the chat one message at a time. This should be very simple and have no impact on e-discovery, privacy or GDPR as you already allow a user to do it individually.
Come on Microsoft, get a move on with this.
please add an option to delete whole conversations in a private chat.
PLEASE FIX THIS
Why is this taking year's for such a simple function?
Please add a delete conversation function. This makes no sense. That is a basic function
Yes please add delete conversation thread.
It's pathetic that they don't have a delete function, if they wanted to do it they would have already done it, I see that this is more to protect big companies from continuing to oppress the end people by the neck!

Adding my vote as well but Delete should also be available in Channel Posts. A lot of clutter is produced either by accident or by automatic messages.
The "DELETE" option is one of the most basic functions when creating and using a messaging platform. Microsoft is trying so hard to cram every other option and function in MS Teams that they are forgetting and/or overlooking the basics.
And if you think about that logically, the Chat/Messaging feature is the #1 used function on MS Teams, so if people are not happy with how that feature works or their options for using it, then they are NOT going to be inclined to even look at or care about the other "extra" features offered in MS Teams.
You would think that Microsoft would take note of what happened with the hacking of Zoom and be more inclined to keeping people's information safe. Sadly, like every other company they will not worry about it until it actually happens to them.
MS Teams is such a disappointment.

As a teacher, I would like to delete the chat related to the meetings that I organized myself.
Apparently, the best option to protect your privacy is to not use Teams any longer -- DONE!. There are other options out there and my company has allowed us to migrate away from Teams.
It was a good while it lasted but the benefits do not overcome the risk. You know what happens when you ignore your customers.
A chat always involves several parties, how can one party unilaterally decide to delete a chat?
If a unilateral delete function is added, is there a need to have a backup function for the other members of the chat?
