Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.
agreed, if a hold or eDiscovery is applied to an account then obviously you can't delete, but otherwise, private chats are private and should retain the ability to remove them just like emails, skype, and every other trusted chat application on the planet.
"Hide" is no substitute for proper delete/archive function. USers at my company want the ability to archive ALL chats more than a certain number of days old
Teams is now our company policy but I'm using it just to tell the "Team" to call me when you have a chance. Private is private and should never be retained. Useless product.
Yes, we need to delete private chats. Sometimes stupid things get said and we need to delete them. Also erroneous items should be delete.
eDiscovery and other legal reasons would also apply to Team channel conversations, but it's possible to delete those. What makes Private chat conversations different? Or for that matter email? As long as someone is not placed on an eDiscovery hold, they can delete whatever content they wish. It's the eDiscovery hold which prevents deletion - not the individual application policies. In fact, 'Teams messages' is already an option in the 'Create a new hold' wizard. I find it hard to understand how eDiscovery and doc retention prevents the deletion of Teams chat threads, but not Outlook mail?
(Also, hiding the chat thread would be acceptable if I had a clean slate when I started talking to that person again.)
I'd be fine with the "hiding" option, but I'd like Teams to start a brand new conversation when I start talking to that person or group of people again.
Even Whatsapp, a mobile app has this feature.
This is absolutely ridiculous that Microsoft cannot provide this basic service.
You say you have this under review since April of 2018. Can you please provide the technical difficulties that arises to delete chats. As the application is server / DB based would it be possible to provide an option to delete private chats it creates to many questions on privacy while using this application. As sync has the features everyone wants however Microsoft is pushing everyone to teams! Please provide an eta on when this feature maybe available and if you can please provide the technical difficulties of why its not yet available there maybe people here that can provide a technical knowledge to make this happen.

I'm sorry but you have to give the choice to users, to keep or to delete waht they want, It's the free will, and you must be an actor of that, not talking about leagal reasons, this argument is not valuable.
What is eDiscovery?
Should you not be able to hard delete a conversation due to GDPR? What happens with the saved conversation if you not able to do a hard delete?
I started using Teams a couple of weeks ago in my department and I and my colleagues stopped today. At least to chat with anyone over Teams about private things. In my country(CH) is this behaviour on not beeing able to delete this kind of dialogs illegal. But well, Microsoft is scaring their own customers. It takes a lot o effort to convince people to start using teams and than suddently you give us a reason to stop using it. Big companies, all they want it your data to sell information about you.
Come on MS your stubbornness and stupidity around this basic requirement beggars belief.
I want to delete private chat completelty?
Jullian Knight (and many others) said it well. We need to be able to DELETE chats, not just hide them (so they pop back up next time you chat with that person.)
"The excuses given about eDiscovery and unspecified "legal" reasons are specious in the extreme.
eDiscovery would be covered by the use of the standard "trash" facilities - putting the data into a hidden bin for a set amount of time. It would also be covered by the fact that you would only be deleting YOUR COPY of a conversation, it would be up to the other person to also delete their copy if you wanted it totally gone. This is absolutely standard.
Legal hold would cover all remaining legal requirements I would think.
What is more ridiculous is that you CAN delete INDIVIDUAL items in your own side of a conversation, but you cannot delete your copy of someone else's side of the conversation, nor can you delete a range of items.
What also isn't mentioned is data retention. Forcing data to be retained when it is no longer required or is no longer accurate is also against the law in many regions."
Can you please add this feature?
Im deleting this app
This is stupid. Nobody wants to have the clutter of old chats.
Definitely makes me want to switch back to Slack. It's absolutely ridiculous that you can't clean up a window by deleting a chat. For it to pop back up as soon as you chat again defeats the purpose. Also, I don't like that I can't have a blank window sitting on my screen, but instead one of my recent chats has to be open.
I can think of numerous use cases where the ability to just hide a chat would be inadequate. Consider conversations that inadvertently or intentionally include proprietary, confidential, offensive, private, or illegal content. It is hard to imagine how, after all of the privacy requirements, that this functionality would be approved in areas that have a strict privacy requirement. If someone accidentally makes one wrong comment it can forever be searched and discovered by anyone in the chat. Not cool. This is bound to cause problems.
Hello, not sure if this is correct place to ask this but it is important. If I started conversation with someone (x) and then added another new person (y) and saw messages "user (y) added and history shared". Then I removed person (y) from conversation and deleted all my messages with person (x). question: does person (y) can still see my messages if I deleted and this person was removed ?
