Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your votes and comments on this feature. The team is in the process of finalizing designs for deleting private chat threads. I will update as we have more progress to share.
Please get it done and advise about the status!
Any update on this?
We have to fulfill GDPR! This can't be so complicated!
We require a chat delete for 100% removal of items, provided for deleting all chats in bulk, with no copy stored anywhere. Note that we are currently using another software because Teams does not provide this privacy component.
It doesn’t work! Please add a simple delete feature!! The chat list is disaster now!
I vote to delete chat and history on Teams. Should be easy (right click gives a Delete option... that works).
Get it done! The only reason for storing this data...and the delay in solving this... is that MS will have all data stored on their servers, mine our data and sell it....
That is why we never get an update on this and it will never be installed.
It is a shame but what can we expect from MS....
What options do we have outside TEAMS?
In terms of deleting messages, one of the most important things Teams should have is, from the admin panel, the admin should be able to decide if individual messages can be deleted.
E.g: there are moments when a user might type some abusive comment and then delete it. and there wont be any evidence to provide regarding this.
having the option to disable comment deletion, or to only allow deletion within the first 5mins, would prevent such issues, at least to a certain degree.
I agree with Lucas👍
I vote to delete chat and history on Teams
I agree - I don't want to have a million chats open.
+1 vote to add delete chat history on ms teams.

This really make3s we want to scrap Teams for good. Everything has become so cluttered with my users, and as an admin I need to be able to tidy things up for the staff.

After all this time, I thought OK maybe this will end up being useful as a search repository since my every thought since March has been stone carved into history! But searching for a keyword is a laborious process that stalls and causes the entire app to lock up. Could it be because the search is interrogating millions of irrelevant conversations that could have otherwise been removed?
Someone needs to comment on this, or just say the answer is no. What is the hold up here?

Can we discuss this some more?
..everybody on the same page?
Do you think if we actually got to work instead of sitting around discussing how we could get to work, we could...
Delete option enabled for everything, no bit for this and bit for that!!
I wonder what I should have at my elevenses??
cake? carrot? oooh carrot cake!!
..will I feel guilty, maybe a bag of crisps with the crisps removed, that would be healthy.. but no that’s litter for litter’s sake hmmm
Get my delete working snd do it NOW!!
..not tomorrow, no more meetings, no more votes, no more carrot cake, no more pie charts
(oh pie mmmm), no more referendums, no more teams meetings about teams meetings, no more of what you’ve been doing up til now.
If anyone asks, say Eric said to do it.
Have it done by 1030am tomorrow or stay home from now on.
..and don’t contact us on Teams.

cannot delete chats??
Why is this even a conversation?
Users should have the ability to control their own device and what is stored on it.
I receive one message from a client, deal with his concern, but it’s there in front of me for eternity??
Seriously microdaft, get it sorted!!
Store the history of chats on the moon for all I care but GET IT OFF MY DEVICE.
Voting on it? Are you joking??
Those who want to keep their chats forever can do so, the rest of us want to move on to the next conversation.
Should not even be a conversation, just give us the option to delete stuff we’ve dealt with.
Great product, poorly thought out service.
ps - you have my permission to delete this message once you’ve read it 👍🏻
Is there a good reason why the delete chat functions is not on Teams? I just wanted to know the logic on MS decision not including this feature?
I can only echo Calvin Klein's message. We are regretting having used Teams for work and staff chats as we are now finding it impossible to remove confidential chats from shared computers.
Microsoft need to implement a delete private chat feature urgently!
It is also vital that if someone is removed from a chat group, they can no longer access old messages in that chat either.

Did anyone at Microsoft every use Sykpe and delete a conversation? Or delete a chat in Apple iMessage? Or in the other myriad messaging applications?
Once again, defies logic and boggles the mind that Microsoft would see so many people deleting conversations in so many other messaging applications including Microsoft's own Skype and decide that users don't want that capability.
I didn't choose to use this poorly developed platform, my company did and now they regret it for this and so many other reasons. I'm glad that they're looking at office suite applications offered by other companies and open source.
