Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your feedback! The team has finalized the designs for this feature request, and work is planned to begin shortly. We will share an update as soon as one is available.

Wonder if this will need to be "enabled" at the admin level...

Could anyone explain why hiding private chat is not enough, and deletion is required? Is it purely a legal matter or does anyone see it as UX improvement (and why?)
Great news, thanks for listening guys.
Waiting for this feature to release. Thanks
Thanks for the update. Any ETA for the same or which version will have the feature.
Thank you very much! waiting for the feature release.

Thank you Teams Engineering, please expedite as there may be legal implications of I or others (improperly using my computer) retrieving personal or confidential details that may have been revealed in chats. These need to be destroyed.
I'm not in the US and uncertain of rules but if this was a HIPAA case, then security of this information can be potentially compromised. Which is interesting as MS states "Microsoft Teams ...supports compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and other regulations."
I don't see how making patient confidential details eternally available to me and anyone who may jump onto my computer when my back is turned meets HIPAA regulations...

Wow... Work planned to commence shortly after three years! Laughable. This was a feature that should have existed from day one in teams.
Es wäre wünschenswert wenn Microsoft endlich die Funktionen:
- Teams Chat´s Löchen
- User sperren

Any progress one year after and still waiting for this feature.
Any update from Microsoft, it has been one year now that the designs are In Progess.
When will admins be able to delete messages in chat function on Teams? its a must?
Why does this feature still not exist?! Absolutely basic feature
Don't list excuses of privacy, legal reasons, retention policies, that app or this/that setup is not compatible whatever.
Simply put an option in Settings or even a button on top of the window to give capability to remove/delete the chat.
Why does this not exist! It is confusing.
Do we have any updates on this, please?
Another basic option that should have existed from the beginning.
The fact that this doesn't already exist at the time of implementation of Supervised Chat is ridiculous.
The entire SVC feature is redundant for online safety if chats that already existed are unaffected.
Please add the ability to wipe chats for specific users as an admin, or improve the SVC feature to apply to ALL chats, existing and new.
