Delete Private Chat threads
This request is for the ability to completely delete a private chat thread. (Not hide/archive.)
Again, this was pulled out into its own topic because it is still under review and no decision has been made.
To recap what has already been completed from the other topic:
- Delete your own messages anywhere in Teams.
- Team Owners can choose if users can edit/delete in their tenant as well as choose if admins have the power to delete any message posted in public channels.
- The ability to hide your private chat threads (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
- The ability to mute your private chat threads. (these are not the chat threads in channels, but the private chat threads that appear when you click the Chat icon on the left-side app bar).
This topic deserves consideration and separating out hot items is something we have often done. Please don't think of this as an attempt to diminish the ask, we know that many people want this.
Thank you for your understanding and feedback.
Thank you for your feedback! The team has finalized the designs for this feature request, and work is planned to begin shortly. We will share an update as soon as one is available.
We need the option to delete chats when not needed!
Why only do half a job and then call it complete ?? < sigh... >

Hi, you can but the Teams admin can disable normal members from deleting / editing in use cases of critical projects or when messages are meant to be kept for audit purposes etc
@Warren, Why did you delete the previous request as complete and you open a new one? The previous request was there for over a year and we still can't delete chats...
Not having the ability to delete a conversation makes no sense. Please implement this feature.

We really need to delete chats and also threads in team channels!!!
Agree generally with the comments below. There will be times when a chat needs to be removed. Probably best limited to people with admin rights.

Without being able to delete useless messages, it clogs up any other important communication.
My team will not migrate to utilise MSTeams until this feature is available. We are staying with Skype for business until Teams gives us the usabillty we need.

As someone else has commented there seems to be a real reluctance in Microsoft to implement this feature. Can you explain why please? Perhaps the ability could be switchable base on a teamsite setting.

I don't understand why this is not already implemented. it's a basic feature...!
So if someone types something in incorrectly or mis-messages the wrong person - it's just silly they cannot delete the thread and start fresh.
This is a no-brainer and will prevent us from fully jumping fro Skype for Business to Teams right away due to legal implications. Of course end users should be able to delete their own chat threads/conversations in its entirety.
Need to better organize....very important

We need to be able to delete chats to comply with our data retention policy.
No, David. It is a feature that Microsoft continues to avoid implementing. Not sure why they are so averse to it. We had it voted up to almost 1500 then they closed the thread because it included Archiving threads (which they did implement.) so VOTE IT UP!

Add to this request. Can you add an ability to remove a specific chat entry in the thread as well?

The use case remains the same. If a chat goes completely off the rails (such as an employee gong full Jerry Maguire, or worse), admins NEED to have the ability to delete a chat thread entirely and make it inaccessible for the entire company. Hide / Archive is woefully insufficient. That this is even something we've had to debate/upvote for months is utterly absurd.
David Moore commented
Isn't this already possible?
Right now you can hide conversations, but deletion would be nice
