Display a highly-visible "ON AIR" or "HOT MIC" indicator
I'd like to have a very obvious, highly visible, affirmative statement that says whether I'm muted or not. Something like "Mic: ON" or "Mic: OFF" would be great. Maybe red for ON and a neutral color for OFF.

Please add this feature. I was laughing because of my dog, suddenly the teacher speaks up my name and ask me if there's something funny on what my teacher said.. didnt know my mic is on. **** its embarrassing.
This seems like and obvious and much needed improvement.

+1 for the STABLE and ALWAYS VISIBLE icon with mic status
This is quite a serious UX issue in my view. The microphone icon does not stand out at all - it blends with camera and share screen icons. It should at least have different colour - e.g.red as in ON AIR sign often used in studios.
I would also recommend adding a red window border/haze to clearly indicate I am broadcasting. Mock-up attached.
How about something to also show whether you're visible or not visible since this constantly changes and you're never sure whether others see you or not on a video conference call?
Yes, my team is constantly saying to others, if you're talking you're probably muted. There seems to be issues syncing the headset mute button with the teams mute setting. I think if it's more accurate for Teams to check if the mic is live, like Hugh states, then let the user control the double mute issue. The highly visible is key since you now have to hover and wait for the Teams mute button to display to notice you are still muted.
