Typing immediately after selecting chat
I'd love to be able to click on a chat (whether an individual chat, a group chat, or a team chat) and immediately be able to start typing. When i click on a chat now, i will have to then click on the message box with the placeholder phrase 'Type a new message', before i can start typing my message to a friend. Without clicking into the message box with the placeholder phrase, typing will activate the shortcuts on screen.
Agreed, this is clunky...
Click in search box
Type colleague's name
Use arrow keys to highlight contact
press enter to select (view shows chat with that contact)
- Now I have to click in the chat box "Type your questions here" to write a message
- This field should have focus automatically to allow me to immediately start messaging my colleague without changing from keyboard to mouse and back again.
KLM-GOMS for the old-school UXers!

I came here to raise the same issue.
Worse than your experience is when I open teams and start typing (without first selecting the "type a new message" area), spacebar will close the window!
About 6 times today I've opened teams - which is already on the chat window I want - and started typing, only to have the window close almost immediately due to my hitting spacebar as I type.
Very annoying and simple usability issue.
Update** it seems like this happens on and off. Sometimes I can start typing immediately, sometimes I cannot. I wonder if it depends on where i actually click on when i select a particular chat. But i have not figured it out yet.
