Allowing to set nicknames or handles would solve for folks who don't go by/like their legal name, and also break down the business barriers. When I'm talking to someone in real life, I never use their full legal name. Seeing it in chat makes the conversation so formal. Our teams are like our second family and certainly friends, so let's allow folks to be more friendly and use informal names.

c - This would help with people whose legal names aren't the same as other names if they don't identify with their legal name.

c - I work with people with the same first name and similar last names. Also, some people do not even go by their legal first name.

I like c, but my main wish is to @ my co-worker "Jonny" so that it shows up as "Jonny," instead of "Smith, John Q." or whatever format my organization has set.
That use-case probably means I should only be able to @ a nickname they set for themselves (option a), and never @ the individual nickname for a contact I set (option b)

c. however in meetings, I think the original name with (person assigned self nickname a. ) should be present, and b. should be abstracted from others.
