allow the users
a) to set a own nickname, which could be displayed when people hover over my icon
b) allow me to set individual nicknames (=additional data, remarks) for a contact and show that when I hover of them
c) both (a+b)
Many social communication tools already have this functionality.
Discord for example allows you to set a default nickname and also allows you to create a custom nickname for each channel you join.
Skype has always had this ability.
Not sure how this was overlooked in Teams. If I were joining a channel about programming I might want to use "Bob C#" to indicate that I preferred to be called Bob instead of Robert and that I specifically code in C#.
Please also let us search by nickname to find people quickly. When you work with people all over the world, some places have very long names and everyone goes by a nickname, it would be great if people could set global nickname too.

I work with hundreds of people who have very specific jobs, and need to be able to nickname what they do.
i.e. Amit Gourav works a very specific task, and I have hundreds of people like Amit all doing something different - I'd like to be able to change the name displayed to "Amit G - FRO IS - Mumbai". When Amit sends me a message in Teams, I can know what he does/understand the context of his commentary.
C please. I have a lot of coworkers who have nicknames but aren't displayed in Teams like they are in alias in Outlook.
oh yes, Nicknames would be realy helpfull to make it more easy especially with very long Usernames
Option c) please
c (both) would be excellent

I work a lot with colleagues in the Philippines. Their names in the corporate directory are rarely the names used in verbal and written communication. Being able to set a nickname is a must.
I could imagine the situation in the US is similar where "Goode, B. Jonathan" is likely just called "Johnny".
User name/nickname yes and option to only display them - eg Hide email name and ph - so not to give external users all our contact info or others in the team that are external

Yes - when do we get this ability? I work with dev teams overseas, none of which go by their given name - the all have nicknames. Very difficult to remember who is who.

Would be really good for global teams - especially in countries where people generally don't use their given name (e.g. Philippines)
100% needed, especially for External contacts, which may not have metadata available to display their full name.

Adding my support, this will be a very helpful feature.
Agreed, this is annoying isn't it William HENRY GATES III
Seriously, disliking our move to Teams, it's doing far too much for one product and it can't even get the basics right around things like nicknames.
Feedback active on this topic since 2017? - I don't think this is going to get priority.
Please add the ability for users to create nicknames for there colleagues, friends and teammates. My team is global and we just switched over to MS Teams. Please add this functionality it’s such an easy add on.
