Dont sort conversations based on last response
Do not sort conversations based on the most recent response. Keep conversations sorted based on Date and Timestamp of the initial post. When you sort by last response, conversations started earlier get lost. An accurate chronological sort is more useful here.

See also the much-more-commented item titled "Keep the messages in channels in chronological order," where I just posted (as a comment) a detailed design suggestion. I believe implementation of that design as a user-choosable option would fulfill the interests posted here as well.
I'd prefer to be able to configure the preferred sort order in Chat or Teams myself. Sometimes I want to sort by oldest to newest (like Slack, Hipchat, etc) or from newest to oldest (Yammer, Facebook, etc). But sometimes I want to sort based on the First Name of the person I was talking with. It's frustrating to find previous conversations with someone when I don't remember the last time I chatted with them.

Would be great if each channel could have a default sort order too. One of our channels is just for conversations about specific dates and it would be great if we could order those by the title/text of first post.

even better: give us options to configure the preferred sort option ourselves:
initial post asc/desc
in s4b, I had my contacts arranged alphabetically, but grouped by department -> why is this not possible in teams?

Totally agree on this.
The idea of the latest activity last is Good. But don't work i real life.
Real Cronological order now, please.
100% agree on this.
I agree - users should be able to configure (mobile and desktop app) to allow conversations to be ordered from oldest to newest (like Slack, Hipchat, etc) or from newest to oldest (Yammer, Facebook, etc).
