@mention like yammer
I would really like to be able to @mention a user who is not in a Teams Team (public or private) or a Channel but a conversation only, similar to how Yammer does it. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/External-messaging-FAQ-Yammer-35b59d6c-bb1c-4541-bf19-9f67d2f2b199 .
I feel this would then stop the massive list of Teams being added to my left hand navigation and it would also mean I would not need access to the whole Teams team to collaborate.

What was the rational for declining this? It makes perfect sense to me. If I have to add everyone I might ever want to contact to every team it defeats the point of having Teams! If this is to stay declined, do you have any advice on how to manage this scenario??

I need this feature for my team - I cannot add all colleagues we work with to my department team as it would be unmanageable

So - MS Teams require every employee to be a member of every team, in case you have to mention them sometime?

I like this idea a lot... I was having a similar issue-- I'd like to be in teams having a conversation and building out a deliverable... then I'd like to be able to send the "attachment" (or a link to it) to the non-team member so I can include their input. Then I would like their feedback to come back into the team conversation.
When I work with my team in teams, it's great. The issue is that we need to work with people in the organization who are not part of our team and that's when the process breaks down. Thanks for considering this idea.
Since this topic is "under review" I'm going to resubmit my idea as a net new idea.

This is an absolute necessity to allow transparent communication for our organization across teams. Right now we have to give membership across the entire organization to every team, as a workaround to allow tagging and proper communication, but this makes notifications extremely messy. Again, enabling this for public teams seems to make perfect sense. Please give us more granular control over tagging across teams and team membership!

Again, this must be configurable per channel.
Concrete example: Some of my chat channels are about XSLT transformations (yes, I know - rock and roll!). This uses the @ character to indicate attributes, not people. This is very common and anything which replaces @child with a link to John Child over in marketing would be annoying.

It would certainly make sense to me to be able to @mention ANY user in a Public team.
Conversely, I would not expect to be able to do this in a private team (or indeed in a private channel in a public team - if private channels become a thing in the future).

We have just come upon this requirement, and very disappointed that it cant be implemented in Teams currently. Similar to how it works in Yammer, a workflow will create a post in a Team. Team members (a special review team with limited membership) need to be able to "CC" users NOT in the team that can participate in the conversation, but not be able to see the rest of the conversations or content.
