do not send messages when <enter> is pressed. change to another shortcut key.
I have to edit my messages several times because every time I press enter for a Carriage Return, it sends instead. I know the shortcut key for Carriage Return is SHIFT+ENTER but its not very intuitive and makes for miscommunication. Thank you for your consideration.
Yep. All MS products actually pretty bad. Microsoft always trying to shove own idiotic standards in industry.
All other chat tools makes decision that send message by enter is a bad pattern, but MS using most bad way... as always though.
Is here Teams developing team? Can you hear my voice? Do you so hate people guys? Please stop to create torture tools. Not effective companies choosing your products, and that is pain for usual workers.
Do you want to use your own standards? Okay, let it be. But please allow to choose between your standards and good standards.
Add Ctr+Enter or Enter option for messae sending
PS Thanks God Edge becomes based on chromium engine and one of MS standards gone.
Honestly, the lack of this function makes a big difference to the use of Teams as a core chat tool in the office. I am constantly accidentally sending chats.
Just make it CTRL + Enter to send, or at least give us the option to turn this on. It's been proven over & over in other apps.
Enter = "carriage return"
Shift+Enter = "line break"
Ctrl+Enter = "send"
I wonder at what age it becomes young enough to not understand why it is called "carriage return...." ;)

"Enter" = "carriage return"
"Ctrl+Enter" = "send"
so simple. But nooooooooooooo!
Please make "return" an option in Teams, rather than sending the message. It's critical. Thank you.

Teams will replace Skype/Lync soon...but teams chat settings are missing... how about knowledge and functionaltity transfer from old to new applications? Is it really neccesary to reinvent the wheel??
totally agree, there should be a simple setting to toggle this to suit user preference. I just sent a message by accidentally hitting enter when reaching for #

Ugggh, I couldn't agree more! The inconsistencies across 365 products are a hot mess!

Shift-enter would be good for Samsung Dex users who are using a hard keybaord to use Teams

This Enter or Shift+Enter behavior is so inconsistent with the uses of all other platforms...
"Enter" should be "carriage return"
"Ctrl+Enter" should be "send"
Please oh please change this, this is so painful 😳
I agree. Stop sending the message when the return key is pressed. Very annoying.
On the phone you have to click a send button, why can we not have a similar option for the desktop version of Teams?
This is also inconsistent. In some settings, you can hit enter as much as you want without sending the message, in others, hitting enter sends the message. That's bad UX and we all know it.
People point out that entering "Editing" aka "Formatting" mode will turn it off on the desktop - ok then: How can I make it so I am always in editing mode for myself, or so that all channel messages only use or default to using editting mode?

Hold down the SHIFT key and tap the ENTER key to go to the next line without sending the message.
This feature request is there for about three years (as well as other reasonable requests), people really want it and nothing happens. What's so difficult to implement such small feature?!
I'm now forced to use Teams in our company and I'm highly disappointed. It looks like a childish chat for teenagers for whom it's enough to smudge their fingers on smartphone displays, it lacks basic features and possibility of any customization which all other free messaging communicators have. I'm sorry, but it doesn't look like a paid product for professionals. Please do something with it!
PS: There is no "Advanced" section in preferences, maybe it was in the past(?), but not now. Using the "Format" button is not a solution, because after sending the message, it turns back to the default mode. Besides that, the input field in the "Format" mode is incredibly huge and cannot be resized. It's still easier to press Shift + Enter, which is not a solution.

@MJ: I have no Advanced option under Preferences in Teams (client and web version). Is this maybe something that can be disabled/enabled in the admin panel of Office 365? Teams version 1.3.00.13565 (I've enabled the developer preview also, but no difference)

me too, it used to work now its what i could consider malfunctional.
I agree - this is really annoying and affects usability. The fact it is different on mobile phone to desktop just means you keep pressing it more, forgetting!
Go into your Profile, Select Preferences, Advanced. Scroll down to the second section and click the radio button to "Start a new line by entering Cntl+Enter". This will free up the enter key to advance the line versus sending your message.
